Not MM-related: travel buffs/dreamers

So yesterday H and I were talking about lifetime travel goals.  We came up with the following goals, which we will revise as we see what life throws at us:

-Visit all 50 states
-Visit at least 25 countries

Rules: We will count the USA on our list of 25 countries.  Cruise stops count, as do very small countries so long as they are legally independent (ie: Vatican City).  However, airports don't count and you have to actually set foot on the ground - so if your cruise docks and you don't get off the boat, it doesn't count.

We're still debating whether we should count territories separately.  For instance, if I visit Scotland, can I count that separately from England?  I vote yes, H votes no.

My stats: by the end of 2015 I will have been to 24 states, 1 US territory, 8 countries, and 1 European territory (from a country that isn't one of my 8).
H's stats: by the end of 2015 he will have been to 27 states and 14 countries.  No territories.

Neither of us have been to Canada! We're saving it for a year when our budget is tight.

We had better get cracking!

What are you goals & stats?

One additional rule: we also have to remember the trip.  So H can't count the Netherlands, and I can't count Texas.  We both visited as babies (and believe it or not, I've never been back to Texas).

My H and I don't have quite as specific travel goals, but we do have them! Ever since we met we've been dreaming of traveling to Poland together. I studied abroad in Krakow for a semester but H hasn't been yet. We're making that dream come true this September!!

Beyond that, we want to explore the National Parks out West, H wants to return to Hawaii some day (I'm on board with that ;)) and we want to take our future kids to Poland. I love to travel so basically I want to see the whole world!

  • Hey I like that! Nice!

So far our plans include to go to the places that I've traveled with my family as a kid. Once we finish those we will start picking places on our own to visit. Most of them will be in the US, we really don't have any desire to travel outside the country except for the Caribbean

Poland is hard-core on my short-list.  Krakow looks pretty amazing to me.  We just haven't gotten there yet because I'm kind of waiting for the public transportation between Poland and other countries (like the Czech Republic) to improve so we could combine them.

I've never been to the major national parks, but H has been to most of them.  We're saving those for kids, because we think they would be a great family vacation spot.

I almost had an opportunity to add Colorado to my list this year (with no cost to me!), but alas... that trip got cancelled :(

H has been to some random places.  He's been to Luxembourg.  And he also randomly spent a week in Panama a few years ago.

@hoffse Krakow is definitely amazing!! It's a lesser known gem of Eastern Europe and I recommend visiting it in a heartbeat. But yeah, that transportation part. Let's just say the part of our trip in September I'm most nervous about is getting from Munich to Krakow. I'm expecting that we'll miss a train connection.

As a single person, I had a travel goal that I would go somewhere every year --once it was just to visit a friend in cleveland-- and travel internationally every three years. It was great! This year is actually the first that I haven't traveled anywhere out of state since I was maybe 15.

Married goals are a little different...

-Visit each continent (except Antarctica because it's not at all enviro-friendly to do so)

    -Oregon Trail Road Trip
we live in MO, so we're actually going to stop in Independence to "pick up supplies" and then drive out catching mt. rushmore, yellowstone, etc. all the way to portland. then we'll fly back. this trip will most likely be double duty: debt free celebration and last trip before TTC

-US places on our list: Maine/Vermont/Leaf-Peeping, Seattle (and Vancouver w/ it), San Diego, Alaska

-International places on our list: Germany/France, Turkey/Greece, Italy, Vietnam, Inca Trail

My stats: by the end of 2015 I will have been to 17 states and DC, 4 countries including US, and 3 continents (N. America, Africa, Europe)
H's stats: I don't know about states for him, but he's been to 3 countries including the US and 3 continents (N. America, Asia, Europe)
  • I'd also love to go back to Tanzania and take DH there, but it's hard for me to think about re-visiting a place, even one I loved so much, when there are new places to visit.

OK I'm kind of obsessed with the Oregon trail idea.  LOVE it!  I also completely forgot about DC.  So +1 for that.

@simplyelise, it's pretty amazing that in 4 countries you have hit 3 continents!  In my 8 I've only hit 2 continents.  I keep going back to Europe.  Can't seem to stay away.  Europe also makes up my longest list of countries I still want to see out of any continent, so I suspect that trend will continue for awhile.

We're hoping to explore South America a bit post-kids, because the flights aren't crazy long for us out of Atlanta.

+1 to this problem.  I spent a month in Italy, primarily in Rome, while I was in college.  I absolutely loved it.  But I didn't get as far north as Venice or Milan, and I didn't get quite as far south as the Amalfi coast.  I want to visit both areas, but I can't be that close to Rome and not stop.  So that would be a re-visit two times over!

  • Um, England and Scotland count as 2.  Or at least I counted them separately.  Same with when I visited Whales.  All counts.

Right now on our list is to go to Hawaii, Alaska, Europe again, and of course toss in our Caribbean vacations in there.
We have very high on our list to do a coastal trip on each coast.  So start in the tip of Maine and drive to the Keys.  And also go from northern Washington to San Diego along the coastal highway.  This will likely be when we're retired or at least after kids are out of the house.  We want to take a convertible and take our time while making stops along the way.  My H is a big car guy, so of course he wants to take a comfortable convertible for the trip.

All of these are why we want to go crazy on our retirement funds.  We don't mind the idea of being those people who retire at 60 and 58, and just travel.

I've been to 13 countries and 2 additional European territories (Gibraltar and the Canary Islands).

We've prioritized international travel, so haven't been to as many domestic locations, but I have traveled both coasts and been to Hawaii.

We're now TTC so travel plans have slowed a bit, but I've still got my eye on Thailand, Dubai and Costa Rica for future trips.

We're also banking points to fly first class on our next big trip. :)

  • I do want to hit all 50 states (I think my current count is 30, I've lost track).  I do count airports, for me as long as my feet are on the ground it counts.

I don't have a country count, but there are few places I wouldn't visit given the opportunity.

We have moved into the travel with kids stage, so things look pretty different now that they did a few years ago. Our goals are to do 1-2 airplane trips to visit family, 1-2 driving trips to see sights, and 2+ camping trips each year (the camping and driving trips can double up). Long term goals with kids are to visit all the major national parks, live abroad for 6-12 months, and help them learn a second language. International travel goals for DH and I include Asia, especially Thailand and India. AK is my dream domestic vacation.

As far as I can remember right now I have been to:
    9 countries (4 continents)
27 states plus DD and at least 5 more states that were drive throughs but not destinations
  • smerkasmerka member

I am missing ten or so states. AK, WA, OR, ME, MD, RI, DE, MA, SC, and GA. And DC. If you don't count driving through, there might be a couple less. I am sure I Have driven through GA and SC and probably some other east coast states, but I was too little to remember.

I have been to Canada, Mexico, England, Ireland, Germany, Netherlands, and Belgium. A lot of those were on band trips in college and beyond.

I would love to either do WA and OR or the northeast next summer for our ten year anniversary. The Grand Canyon is on the list to do with the kids.

I know DH wants to see England. I want to see Italy, Greece, and New Zealand.
  • We don't have stats so much as a bucket list of destinations. As of now it is:

International: Belgium/Netherlands, Spain, France, Slovenia/Croatia, Japan, Hong Kong, Southeast Asia, Peru, Galapagos, New Zealand (again for me), Brazil/Ecuador (rainforest trip), diving trips mixed in sporadically.

US: National Parks primarily (Olympic, Rocky Mountain, Yosemite (I was there briefly), Yellowstone. We're saving these for kids too, @hoffse.

I'm interested that so many having long road trip goals! I get very bored on long car rides so that's never been a huge priority for me.

Our next big trip will probably be Amsterdam/Belgium, which I view as pretty compatible with our TTC plans (though no beer would be slightly sad). We'll see how things shake out with restructuring at my job...Thailand and Vietnam would be highest on my list but I just can't get H excited about it, so Japan or Hong Kong will hopefully be our first Asia trip. That's a bit of a ways off financially, though!

I have been to a lot of places (I don't count airports or driving through) but DH hasn't.  We just did our first big International trip together to Morocco.  It was great and now I can add a 5th continent to my stats.

Our goal is Hawaii for our 5th anniversary.

Poland is a lovely country to visit :)

  • edited May 2015
Wow, it's so cool to see all the places that everyone has gone! @csuave how was Morocco? I've always wanted to go there and have been trying to convince my mom to do a mother-daughter trip there! :)

Out of the two of us, I am definitely the more adventurous traveler. I think I got it from my dad--he used to travel internationally for work and would take me along with him, so as a kid I got to go to cool places like Belgium and Australia. Now I want to go back and visit those places as an adult!

DH's idea of a vacation is someplace tropical with a beach (we stayed at our first all-inclusive last month and he says he's spoiled now and only wants to do that from now on!). This year it was Jamaica, last year we just did Brazil (DH's 1st trip there), the year before that it was the Bahamas.

As a couple, we go back to visit his family in Colorado at least once a year, and we also try to visit Brazil once a year to visit my family. We have been trying to change that to every other year because it gets so expensive but that hasn't gone over very well with my family. On top of that we also try to do one non-obligatory (so not just visiting family) trip. I'm hoping for England or France, but DH has his heart set on St. Lucia so we'll see what happens next year.

Side note, for Christmas DH got me a one of those big maps that you can scratch-off places as you visit them. I think it's so cool! :)

    Forgot to include my stats!
USA--Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Washington DC, California, Delaware, Maryland, Texas, Kansas, Utah, Wyoming, California, Nevada, Ohio, Nebraska, Alabama, Virginia, Oklahoma.

Countries: Brazil, Jamaica, Bahamas, Belgium, Australia, Columbia, Mexico, India (had a blast studying abroad!), Argentina, South Africa, Portugal, Spain.
  • We're avid travelers and pretty much our only rule is to try our best to always go to someplace new.....no repeats.  We do plan on breaking that rule in a couple years as we plan to revisit our honeymoon spot!  We will also repeat places that aren't as "major"....say, a long weekend in Florida.

We thought about doing 50 by 50.  All fifty states by age 50.  We're in our late 30s and we're both not too domestically traveled....about 18 states for me, maybe a couple more for DH.  But honestly, we enjoy international travel so much that we keep putting off the US.

We also try to balance out adventure trips with relaxation trips.  We're going to Punta Cana next month to relax and our fall trip is looking like China,  Neither of us have been to Asia so it's about time.

We also have some trips that that will have to wait until retirement solely because we can't take off more than a week, maybe a week and a half at most, from work.  So traveling across the international dateline is tricky.  And others just have really neat itineraries that are 2-3 weeks....like river cruising in Asia.

    I'm at around 17 countries.
  • We don't have any goals really.  We do want to go back to Hawaii for our 10 year anniversary.  We will want to go to Kaua'i again but do a little more island hopping.  I don't really have any desire to travel to europe - I know I just don't like huge time changes because it takes a major toll on my body.

    - Have fun

    - Make time to go back to the best places, share them with our children, and/or just for ourselves
    - Travel both near and far
    - Stop and soak it in when we get there
    - Learn something
    - Specific todos: climb Mt. Hood, snorkel or dive at the Great Barrier Reef, visit the Galapagos, see the Northern Lights, hike hut-to-hut in the Alps, return to the British Isles, see Petra, see Iguazu Falls, go back to Hawaii

I'm not really into stats, don't think they really capture it. But here are some of ours:
    - We've been to 24 countries together on 5 continents (most of this during a 6 months RTW trip).
    - We've been to a heck of a lot of US states together, though I haven't been counting exactly (For example, long distance road trips have included: West Virginia to Los Angeles, Los Angeles to Chicago, Cincinnati to Atlanta to DC and back to Cincinnati, Madison to Portland)
    - Yet some of the most amazing places we've been are practically in our own backyard (Oregon): Crater Lake, Columbia River Gorge, Broken Top, Crack in the Ground, just to name a few

  • I've traveled pretty extensively through the U.S., though I don't have a goal or even a need to visit all 50 states.  In fact, U.S.-wise, I feel like I've been pretty much everywhere I've wanted to go, except Alaska.  I've even lived in three very different places...So. CA, NOLA, and Miami (though Miami was only for 3 months).

Internationally is where I am woefully lacking.  I've been to Canada many years ago.  I've been to two different parts of Mexico.  And the Baja part, I've been to a bunch of times because I grew up only about 60 miles away from it.

Right now, I can only focus on Europe because that is where I have always wanted to go the most.  I'm not even sure what parts, though I am more drawn to Italy and Germany.

My DH has traveled extensively through the U.S. also.  He's lived in OR, AL, TX, and NOLA.  He was in the Army in his younger days and lived in Panama and Germany for short periods of time.  He's also been to Mexico a lot.  But that was all a long time ago and long before I was in the picture.

  • Ohmigosh, this is by far my favorite thread ever!  H and I love traveling (so far, just domestically).  We have quite an extensive travel bucket list.  We have a giant map of the US on our living room wall with all of the place we've visited pinned.  We've never been east of the Mississippi River!

We want to visit all 50 states together.  We have visited 17 so far.  We each have a few other states we've been to individually, but we're only counting together.  Also, we only count places if we have stopped there, either for a meal or a gas fill up or something like that.

We also want to see a baseball game at every MLB ball park.  We've been to 7 so far and will hit two more when we go on vacation next week!

We love to visit National Parks and I've lost count of how many we've visited.  We go to as many as possible if we are going to be close to one.

We are planning to go on a British Isles cruise for our 10th anniversary; we both really want to visit Ireland and Scotland.  This will be our first international trip.

    Other places on our list:

The Caribbean; France; Italy; NYC; Boston; Acadia National Park; New England (fall foliage); Philadelphia; Washington DC; New Orleans; the Florida Keys; Banff, Canada; the Mediterranean; Australia; Belize

Italy is wonderful - I spent a month in Rome in May and it was absolutely perfect weather - low 80's, sunny, breezy, and just before the massive hoards of tourists hit in June.  I have had a few moments in life when the breath was literally knocked out of me by what I was looking at - I experienced that both in St. Peter's basilica and also at Pompeii.  The Sistine chapel and the gardens at Tivoli also gave me that feeling, though to a slightly lesser degree.

I loved our trip to London last year, but I only had that "knock out" feeling once - when visiting Stonehenge while the sun was rising.  That was unbelievable, and we lucked out with a cloudless sky.

We're going to Germany for the first time over Christmas week this year.  I think the ideal time of year for that country is either October (Munich - Oktoberfest) or else in December leading up to Christmas.  German Christmas markets are totally a thing that other countries try to replicate, and from what I read on travel blogs nobody does it quite like the Germans.  We're really excited to hit some Christmas markets this year and see what that's like.

If Italy draws you, I would also look into Spain.  Seville, Granada, the day trip possibilities from Madrid, the Gaudi architecture in Barcelona.... yeah, if we can swing it, that is where I would love to go next year.

  • @hoffse, thanks for the tips and great descriptions.  Aaahhh...I literally closed my eyes and momentarily traveled there.  I've also heard Spain is amazing.  My cousin married a Spaniard and he's offered us a place to stay if we ever go there, so perhaps we could swing a trip out there for a few days also.  It's always hard for me to envision countries that seem so different are actually very near to each other geographically.

I'll be interested to hear about your all's Germany trip and the Christmas markets when you get back.  I have a coworker whose mother is German and he spent his childhood summers in Germany.  He has been a plethora of information about the country, the people, and their customs.

  • Our goals are to:

-Visit all 50 states (off the top of my head I'm not sure how many I've been to)

-Travel as much as possible and to as many countries/places as possible

-Take a least 1 trip every year out of state (I say this because we usually vacation at a beach 3 hours away but still in MD every year)

-Go to all the major National Parks in America.

-Go to Hawaii for 2 weeks for our 5 year anniversary! So I'm starting to save now for that, so we have a decent budget for the trip in 4 years.

-There are a few cruises I have my sights on too Alaska and a 2 week mediterranean cruise.

-I'd also really love to go cage diving with great whites which will result in another trip (unless we do this in Hawaii) :)

I should also mention that H & I are not opposed to going to the same destination a few times. We absolutely love Punta Cana and have been back twice and would love to go again. And we don't count places we pass thru, we have a rule that we have to spend at least one night unless of course it's a neighboring state like DE.

One other thing I track (lightly) are UNESCO world heritage sites.  By the end of the year I will have seen 28 of them.  My first goal is 50.  I would also like to see every site that's on the US list that's accessible to tourists (at least one place is not).

I don't design itineraries just to maximize these, but I do always check the list before I visit a country. Sometimes there are world heritage sites in places we are visiting anyway, and that's usually a good bet that we will enjoy it.

The US list is interesting - it's primarily state parks and places with natural beauty.  I've only been to 6/22 US sites!

    The list:
