Weekend reading

I tend to stick to fiction when I read for pleasure but I came across a book this week that I think some women on this board would find interesting.  It's called The Female Assumption by Melanie Holmes.  She's a mother of 3 who writes about needing to end the indoctrination of girls and women in what she refers to as the Motherhood Catechism (ie: the ever present social message that women must have children to be complete) and allow women to truly chart their own paths with, or without having children.

What's different about the message in this book is that it really doesn't advocate for women to have children or not; she discusses the pros and cons of motherhood from her perspective. What she does advocate is that people need to stop judging women who make the choice not to have children and to encourage their daughters and sisters to make the right choices for themselves.

Anyways, I'm hopping off the soap box, but I do recommend the book.  It was an easy read and an interesting take on the subject. Happy reading!
