PSA: Field Agent & Gig Walk

I signed up for these iPhone apps in the last month to start a baby savings fund since we're TTC, and I have to say that I've been pretty impressed.

Basically, they offer opportunities to do quick store inventories, taste tests, surveys, etc.  Payouts are usually in the $3-$15 dollar range per "gig" but I've seen some as high as $40.  Upon completion cash is deposited to a PayPal account.

So far, I've only been signing up for jobs that are at stores I'm already in, or I drive by on my way to/from work or when I'm running other errands.  So far, in the last month I've made about $50, but I could see if you have the time and dedication (and are in a bigger city*) making a lot more.  (*I will say that I've been surprised how many rural opportunities there are too, mostly at Walmart.)  Today, I did a Field Agent job that had me buy a certain coffee at a particular coffee shop.  They reimbursed the cost of the coffee, plus paid an additional $9.

So, if you're looking to make a few extra dollars, I would highly recommend.

  • I've used EasyShift, which is similar. They have you go to stores and take pictures of displays and answer some basic questions. One month I made over $100 from that one app, but more often than not there's no "shifts" available at all.
  • I just downloaded Field Agent.  It seems interesting, thanks for the tip!

Question-do stores ever hassle you for taking pictures of the products?  Years ago when I worked at Target, they sent me out to do "comp shop" at Walmart, recording the price of various items into a big, ugly, PDA.  I stuck out like a sore thumb,  The Walmart employees were really nice about it, understanding I was just doing my job, but some of the managers were kinda rude.

So far, I've never had a problem, but I think with the rise of Instagram and other share sites, people taking random photos has become less questionable than in the past. There are some gigs (worth the higher amounts) that ask for you to speak with the manager and ask them specific questions. So far, I haven't had the gall to sign up for any of those - yet.

  • Thanks for sharing, I'm downloading the apps now--can't wait to try it out! :)
  • I'm excited to try these out too!! About how much time would you say you have to devote to each task on average?

I did two on my way to work, for a total of $11. They were literally both on my way and probably took less than ten minutes combined.
