Carpet questions?

Anyone get new carpet recently? I assume our carpet is original and getting close to 20 years old. We are mainly interested in the main floor which is 2 rooms (not huge). They are definitely wearing down. Our major issue has been pets and accidents. I'd love to replace and start over but worry about pets ruining it! But in laws just looked at carpet and got a pet stain one so I'm starting to consider it. I hate to spend money to replace only for it to get ruined but I'm hoping starting fresh might deter any accidents and if it's stain resistant that would be helpful.

Any experience? I know nothing! Do I just go to Home Depot and pick something and they do everything? About what cost would I be looking at? I have no clue! I know it will depend on quality and size but I guess general idea would be nice

  • I am guessing you are talking about the Stainmaster Pet Protection carpet? We looked at it briefly when we were in our old house but decided on laminates instead. Truthfully with dogs, I find solid surfaces with area rugs work better.

  • We actually had our floor guy here last night to measure for basement carpet--he did our upstairs carpet and installed hardwoods.  Jeff from CLS flooring.  He's very knowledgeable.  We don't have a pet but were concerned about wearing and stains and we ordered a different color of the same cut and loop we have upstairs because it's been wearing nicely. He just quoted us around 1,500 for our basement plus stairs for Bliss 2901 Isle of Capri.  He was able to keep the cost down because luckily our basement is the same width or smaller than the size of the roll it comes on.

I am with you! I like carpet but would love to just do away with it altogether on the main floor because of the animals. But Dh is really adamant about wanting carpet.

Our kitchen, foyer, and dining room are all hardwood so I'm not sure how easy it would be to match up or possibly redo all of it (the hardwood definitely needs refinished at some point anyways). the hardwood goes right up to both rooms with carpet so it would need to match up.

  • We had a horrible experience with Rusmur.  That's who did the flooring for Ryan homes.  We have had carpet and vinyl repaired and eventually replaced and it still looks like crap.

  • We ordered ours through HD and it was an okay experience. We picked out our carpet, put down a small deposit (like $35?) and they gave us a rough estimate in the store based on room dimensions. The deposit pays for them to come out and officially measure/give an estimate. When they did that our price went up quite a bit (they hadn't taken into account closets and such previously), so we went back and re-chose our carpet. We went for a higher quality pad and a more run of the mill carpet. It's fine - nothing fancy. Our install was done by someone the store contracted and my biggest gripe was that instead of just talking to me when they encountered a snag (I was sitting downstairs the whole time) - they'd call Home Depot, who'd in turn call my husband since his name was on the work order. Not sure if that was standard practice (very well could be), but it was annoying.
