Exterior Doors

We bought our house about 6 months ago. We've since noticed that the back door frame is completely falling apart from wood rot. You can basically stick your hand through a 4 inch hole from the the outside all the way to the dry wall on the inside. The dry wall is the only barrier to the outside in certain parts because it's so rotted.  We were have major ventilation and bug problems as a result of this, so as a temporary fix, we filled all the holes with wood filler.

The front door structure is fine, but it's a boring super cheap door painted black (which doesn't match my style). Plus there are no windows in the front of the house, so the only way we can see outside is through the peep hole. Also, there is only one deadbolt- the knob doesn't lock so I don't feel super secure.

I want to replace the entire back door frame & door and the front door. Does anyone have an idea what this kind of project would cost? Have you done something similar?

Re: Exterior Doors

  • HCOL here, but when we bought our house 3 years ago we replaced the front door and back door ( there was lead paint in the frames and we have small kids- and there was no window in our front door either. I want to say we paid about $250 or $500 (labor) per door plus the cost of the door ( we got ours at Home Depot). I think it was more likely $250 a door, and I'm just remembering $500 because we did 2.
We got a basic aluminum Jen weld door with an oval window. That was between $200-300. Then the handle and lock were also from Home Depot, I think it was around $150. HTH

Did you have Home Depot do the installation?  We're talking about replacing both storm doors as well as the front door, and DH seems to think maybe he can do it himself, but I've seen how those projects usually go, and I'd rather just pay for installation.  But I wasn't sure if that would mean hiring a contractor or if HD did that kind of installation.

Also, hi!  I don't usually post here, but I lurk from time to time.  Thanks!
  • This will be highly dependent on labor costs, the size of the door (is it a custom size?), and the type of door you order.

I would guess that for a medium quality door with installation could be about $1,000.

We replaced our back door (sliding glass door in a custom size).  We went through Home Depot and ordered an Anderson door (wood on the inside and vinyl exterior with a screen door) and the door and installation was $2,000.

  • It's always difficult to estimate the cost of such a project. It always depends on the quality of the materials and the labor. I'd get quotes from some local businesses and see what they can offer. It depends on your budget too of course.
  • Investing in exterior doors is one of the most cost-effective ways to improve your home. While home renovation, installing or replacing new doors and windows can add so many things to a home. There are many article sources available that share a great information about exterior doors and many more.
