Pines (spoilers) *SusieBW come in!

I'm dying to know what you thought was going on in Wayward Pines. My money was on either aliens or some kind of weird government experiment. I did a double take when I saw that they'd been there for almost 2000 years and everyone had been reanimated at different times. So crazy.

I'm really curious to see where the rest of the series goes with Ethan as the new sheriff in town. Jenkins/Pilcher is so super creepy and I couldn't believe that whole fete and what happened to Beverly. Have you started the second one yet?

  • Butting in -

I just finished the series last night. I really enjoyed it. So weird and twisty. Dying to see what you think as you go along.

I have a couple of books due back at the library that I want to finish before I jump into the next one, but I will definitely post as I read the rest of the series.

The bad thing about some books or TV shows with crazy complex mysteries like this one is that they can get you so hooked on the pieces of the puzzle and dying to know how they all fit together, but spin out of control (I'm looking at you and your polar bears, Lost) and the ending can never live up to the anticipation of the mystery.

One of the best things about this book for me was that the ending was just as cool as the journey to the answers.

  • Yes!  I'm glad that the ending was more plausible than aliens or something.  The time situation was the only thing that really kept throwing me off.  Like, how has the wife been here for 5 years?  How does Beverly not know it's 2012 (or whatever it was)?  That was like an itch I couldn't scratch for the whole book.

So, while I was reading Pines, I was constantly reminded of that Michael Douglas movie The Game.  Did you see that?  It was a huge, super-elaborate effed up kind of theater set up for Michael Douglas for his birthday, where his whole life was turned upside down and everyone he encountered seemed to be in on it.  And it kept getting more and more twisted as it went on.  In my head, I kept thinking that maybe Wayward Pines was the same kind of situation, set up to help Ethan manage PTSD after the torture in Fallujah.  It just seemed like every situation he found himself in was tailored to his skill set somehow.  Like, a lesser person might not have survived this, but he continually survived by the skin of his teeth.  Again, and again, and again.

That scene with the forced surgery, hospital escape and then Beverly and Ethan being hunted was what I was reading out on my deck in the dark all alone on Saturday night - CREEPY!  And I was totally not expecting that Pope would be left behind at the end!  That threw me.  Did you see that Terrence Howard is playing Pope in the TV show?  Doesn't fit the character description from the book AT ALL, but I think he looks great in the role.

We are planning to get the next book from the Kindle Lending Library, but have already used up our loan for July, and have to wait til Saturday to get it.  I totally hear you about the Lost polar bears, too!  I sort of gave up on that show the last season because I just couldn't even keep up with how crazy it got.  If this first book, was any indication, I have positive hopes for the rest of the series - he pulled together this ending really well, and I think it was a great stand alone book, so hopefully he can hold the series together just as well.
  • I'm 50 or so pages into book 2, I'm glad I stuck with it so far it's good. Those stupid Abbies are driving me nuts, the author didn't need to spend a good 10 pages with Ethan fighting off the Abbies, I get it.

I'm glad I only watched 1 episode of the show so far, I couldn't believe how far they jumped ahead in the first episode.

I agree there are some loop holes and I'm sad for Beverly, seemed like she was a good one. I kind of thought this would be like a "the Village" or "Divergent" where it was some dystopian society created for some purpose. I'm glad they didn't get too preachy when they explained why they froze everyone for 2000 years. Kind of scary to think about how true the author might be.
