Kindle paper white?

Anyone have kindle paper white? How well does the screen hold up?

I've had a nook for several years. Then a couple years ago I got the nook glow light. I love the light feature but have had a lot of issues with it. My first one froze and got a scratch and was replaced. The next one (replaced by warranty) got a small scratch pretty quickly. It then shows up as a bright light there and is annoying. But it was in a place not usually where text is so I've dealt with it. Well apparently today I have a much bigger scratch right smack dab in the middle. Ugh! That will be annoying! I have a case but I think I fell asleep reading and it fell and must have hit something. I'm not super rough on it but it certainly isn't holding up.

I'm wondering if I should eventually switch to kindle. I'm not seeing reviews complaining about screen scratches. I still have a lot of ePub nooks that Id need to read on my book but I'd be ok switching and getting new stuff as kindle.but I don't want the same issues! And I love having an integrated light so I don't want to switch to regular version.

Oh and anyone know if they usually have kindle PW Black Friday deals? I'm willing to wait to get it at this point

I hate continuing to buy new ones but I am such an ereader convert! I won't go back to books.

Re: Kindle paper white?

  • I have a plain old kindle and my screen has held up great.  No scratches.  And I read all of the time and pretty much take it with me everywhere.   (Like waiting for a doctor, etc).
  • I had the original kindle, then switched to the paper white. I love it. I've had it for about 3 years with no complaints. I read it every night and have never damaged the screen. I've taken it to the gym, to the beach, to the pool and it's never been damaged. I fall asleep reading it just about every night.

I love being able to easily borrow e-books from the library right through the Carnegie interface (it takes you over to the Amazon interface to download the book).

The backlight is awesome. I never have to adjust it for day/night - it always looks good, doesn't glare, and isn't overly bright.

  • We don't have the Kindle paper white, but have the Nook glow light, original Nook (not sure what version, it's about 5 years old), and the Kindle Fire.  We have never had any issues with any of them. Both boys play with them too, so they have seen some rough days! Do you use any kind of case with it?

Yeah I have a case that has a flip cover. But I think the issues have happened when I've fallen asleep reading. So the flip part is back so I can read and the screen is exposed. This last time it fell on the floor and must have hit something.

Ugh! I still have my original nook with the same cover and never had issues. The glow screen is definitely the problem. I might just switch over to kindle PW just out of annoyance at this point.

Here's a pic of mine right now. You can't see the scratches themselves but because of the scratches you get a bright glowing spot there. There's another tiny scratch near the top right you can't really see. I tried reading last night and it's so annoying! Obviously I can just not use the glow light because the scratches aren't bad themselves but that defeats the purpose of the device for me! image

  • i have a regular kindle and i bought a gum drop case for it. its pretty heavy duty. i think it came with a screen protector. my 5 year old is really rough on it and it still works and has no scratches.
  • Yeah, I with Meghan on this and I have an original and a Glowlight and have no issues. Heck, I don't even have a case for the Glowlight, just a neoprene sleeve to throw it in my bag and mine ends up between the wall and mattress a lot.
