A kitchen remodel that will stand the test of time

Kitchens are typically the first room in the house that show their age. Because preferences change over time, what makes a kitchen desirable for one person may offend another’s sense of style. The kitchen is often the deal breaker for prospective buyers and when it’s not, it’s still as likely as not to be remodeled by the new owner. If you’re considering a kitchen remodel but want a kitchen that won’t make your home difficult to sell down the road, consider these timeless design tips for a kitchen remodel that will stand the test of time.

Storage

A kitchen with plenty of storage space is always in style. Remember that the amount of storage isn’t the only thing to consider. It’s also important that everything is within easy reach. Storage space is useless if you need a step ladder to reach things stored there. The sweet spot is between 15 and 48 inches. For lower cabinets, consider installing slide-out shelves and turntables to maximize use of the space and to make it easier to see what’s inside without having to get down on all fours.

Work space

Having adequate counter space is an important consideration but it’s also a good idea to have counters at various heights so as to accommodate children and adults who prefer to alternate between sitting and standing when preparing food. A great way to do this is to replace the island with one with different levels.

Sinks and faucets

Don’t skimp on the sink and faucet. Choose a nice, deep sink that will give you plenty of room to work with when washing dishes. Choose a faucet with a pull out spray to make dishwashing a breeze. If you want, you can splurge on a hand-free faucet. At the very least, go with a faucet that has lever-style handles rather than knobs that can be difficult to turn when your hands are dirty.

Lights and outlets

Good lighting can make all the difference in your kitchen. Make sure your work areas are well lit. You might install track lighting or under-the-cabinet LED strips to brighten up your work space. If your outlets are 12 inches up from the floor, raise them to 18 inches. If they’re 48 inches up, lower them to 42 inches.

Flooring

Choose an attractive flooring option that’s non-skid and easy to clean. Remember that a lighter color will make your kitchen appear larger. Plan on having at least 42 inches of space in your work aisles for one cook and at least 48 inches of space if there will be more than one cook.

Doorways

If your kitchen has a doorway, widen it so that it can accommodate a wheel chair or large appliance coming through it. Go with a threshold-free doorway so it won’t trip you up and opt for lever handles that will be easier to open than doorknobs.

Appliances

Name brand, stainless steel, energy efficient appliances are ideal if you can swing it. Try to stick with one brand if possible. Choose appliances with bright digital displays so you can more easily see the time and temperature.
