Books About Starting Preschool? Recommendations?

G starts preschool in a few weeks and I'd like to find/borrow from the library some books that talk about the transition and what to expect. This is going to be a rather big change for him. He's been in an in-home daycare with a friend since he was 12 weeks old. His one friend will be attending preschool with him, but there's no guarantee that they'll be in the same class. Also, the preschool is in an actual school, not a daycare center - not sure if that makes a difference in terms of types of books out there.

I have "The Nigh Before Preschool" in my Amazon cart, but I'm looking for some other suggestions. Did you read anything with your kids that seemed to help emotionally prepare them for the transition?

Thanks!

Re: Books About Starting Preschool? Recommendations?

  • Barenstain Bears go to school? We read it to dd a lot before starting kindergarten. If the preschool is an actual school I'm sure it would still be applicable. Love Barenstain bears!

We also did the Berenstein Bears (I know it's spelled -stain, but whatever!  lol), but we did it for Kindergarten since both boys did pre-school at their daycare, so pre-school wasn't really a big transition for them.  For Kindergarten, I think the thing that helped Mason the most was visiting the school.  They had a few events there before school started that we took him to and we would also go to the school's playground during the summer.  I think anything you can do beforehand to make it a familiar place will help with the transition!  Good luck (to both of you)!
  • Oh going to the school playground is a great idea, thanks Meghan!

Aside, did you happen to see the Berenstein Bear thing I posed on FB? It's about the spelling, lol.

  • Have you checked out Focus on the Family's bookstore online? They also have articles on preschoolers that might help. Great resource for transitions and anything family related. Kids are so resilient - it will be a transition period like anything else, but soon he'll be looking forward to seeing his friends!
  • ditto the Berenstein bear book.  It really helpd dd.

  • Thanks, all!
