Spain in late September

My husband and I have to start thinking about our 2016 vacation as he has to put in for vacation this time of year (September) for 2016. Spain is on my bucket list and I'm hoping to go next year. We won't book until later but I want to plan around the dates he can go away.

We typically travel in late September (last week or two) as it's better for me work wise. I could go the first week of October as well. Has anyone been to Spain during this time of year? How is the weather? Anything exciting to see and do, or is it super crowded? Where did you go in Spain? I've always wanted to do Madrid, but I'd like to move around to other cities/areas if possible. This will hopefully be just us, we went on a group trip to Holland in 2014 so we don't have experience planning Europe on our own, any tips on planning would be greatly appreciated.

Also, how far in advance should you actually book? I like to start formally planning for vacation by January to give us time to save and plan, however I don't get my work vacation approved until April or May, is that too late to book for September?

Re: Spain in late September

  • We went to Spain a few years ago - it was the 3rd week of September.  We stayed in Costa del South (southern Spain).  The weather was nice - shorts and tshirts.  We even went to the beach.  But the water was cold.  But granted, it would probably be too cold for me no matter what time of year!

Our Spain trip was one of my favorites.  We booked our hotel and air through Expedia.  Then, we took excursions from our hotel, including Gibraltar, Granada (Alhamabra) and Morocco!  We took the train into Seville one day too (about 1.5-2 hour trip each way if I remember correctly) which was worth it to us.

I also just went back to my emails, and I see that I booked it all in June, so 3 months before our vacation.   You're find with April or May - you don't want to book too early or you'll probably pay more in airfare!

Our hotel was right across the street from the beach and we were able to walk to so many shops and restaurants - it was a great location!

  • We went to Madrid for a weekend in late September for my friend's birthday. We were comfortable in short sleeves, since the weather was nice. And it's not particularly crowded at that time of year (September to November is one of the lowest travel seasons in much of Europe).

I think we booked everything about two months out? So probably around July.
