Christmas

What's everyone buying their kiddos for Christmas this year?

We are getting the boys some paw patrol stuff and clothes but have to decide on their large item yet.  We are leaving toward a power wheels but have also been playing around with using that as a reward if they start using the potty since we are at our breaking point on that.  They understand when they have to go and can tell us they have to go they just refuse to go number 2 in the potty.

Re: Christmas

  • Well my older one is now all into Barbie's. So I would imagine the Barbie Dream House will be on her list! Ha. I am at a loss for the little one. :( Maybe some Fisher Price Little people stuff.
  • We are trying to do less things/toys this year. Hopefully!
I already got dd a kindle fire during a good sale. She uses our iPads to watch Netflix/play games so I figured she would be happy to have her own tablet. And for the price I was happy about it.

Thinking about getting disney on ice tickets.

I have a used american girl doll I grabbed off craigslist a while ago. I might give it to her but might sell it. She ended up getting other dolls so I'm not sure she really needs another one.

I'm sure I will find some other things along the way.

  • I like the less things/toys approach to Christmas and we have stuck to it pretty well we usually do one large thing from Santa and a couple of smaller items each.  Then clothes and a new movie and book each from mommy and daddy.

But my in laws go sorta crazy with the toys.  They out bought Santa and us combined and I was pretty upset about it.

This also happens to be why we have a toy ban when it comes to their birthday in Feb because they just don't need all the junk.

We have the same problem with both sets of grandparents...Moreso my mom. My in laws at least ask. My mom buys a lot of stuff. She's more quantity over quality. dd is our only kid and the only grandkid on both sides so the presents get a little out of control!

We also try to do a big toy sweep prior to christmas. We then donate a bunch of stuff. At least keeps the junk down a bit and a good message around holidays to donate.

  • I am in the same boat ladies. (I am starting to think we also are the only ones on this board anymore.lol). My mom goes NUTS.... NUTS I tell you. My sister in law and I are trying to think of ideas for both sets of kids that are less toys since both houses are filled to the gills. I got SIl Idlewild pass last year that she used alot. I even suggested a weekend at Great Wolf lodge or something. Older daughter has a Dec 30 bday. It is crazy town for sure.
  • For the boys birthday we ask everyone for cash and put it toward a zoo membership that has guest passes and then take anyone who wants to go to the zoo with us throughout the year.

  • I like idea of passes to zoo, etc. I've suggested before to my mom but she is never interested!

  • I feel like DH always wants to buy a bunch of presents b/c that's what he had at as a kid and it just overwhelms her and she ends up ignoring most of the toys.  I had this idea to get DD the Elsa Castle at Costco as her one large gift instead of a lot of little ones even though it's more than I want to spend, it would make my life easy to just have it all done with one purchase.  Then we found out it was sold out and they are not restocking.  We tracked one down in King of Prussia and my nephew picked it up, the let us pay over the phone.  My family was never big on gifts so my mom will just get her some small gifts and put money in her college fund.
  • I sold the zoo pass idea as "We would rather have memories that things that get broken and thrown away"

I tried this last year and mil just wasn't having it.  Boo!

  • I've started my Christmas shopping so this has been on my mind.  My mom also not into giving experiences.  She has done magazine subscriptions in the past for DD--which were a hit.  I also like games--which we only get down when we play as a family (usually) so they always get cleaned up.

So far on the list for DD (6)

    -Karaoke Machine
    -More Barbie Dolls
    -Vet Playset
    -Spirograph
    -Puppy Surprise

    For DS (4)
    -Hot Wheels Wall Tracks
    -Imaginext Stuff
    -Remote Control Car
    -Play Doh
    -Flashlights

  • This one gets good reviews for kids and is inexpensive.

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0037JT95I/ref=s9_wish_gw_d6_g267_i3?ie=UTF8&colid=XCWH9UZ77OAZ&coliid=I2FXKXYZOZ6OKO&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=desktop-1&pf_rd_r=0RS6FXZS8M0M0NVKW7XF&pf_rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p=2079475242&pf_rd_i=desktop

The downside is that it does not have inputs for music sources other than CDs--but a commenter provided a work-around.

I was initially looking at this one with more/better features, but the reviews are spotty.

  • After almost 8 years of sharing a room, we are moving our master bedroom downstairs to the finished gameroom and the boys are getting their own rooms! We plan on buying each of them TV's, but other than that, not sure. Nolan is really into star wars legos, so we'll probably get him a few of them. His b-day is Nov. 25, so I usually wait to see what he gets and then go from there. Hayden is a little harder to buy for so I need to brainstorm and come up with some things! Can't believe it's less than 3 months away!

  • Anyone with 2 same gender kiddos with gift ideas for the little one? We're 100% done having kids now, so I'm being really picky about gifts for Ben knowing they're just going to get sold or donated soon. He doesn't need clothes, he only likes to play with Logan's stuff, and the last thing we need is more stuff laying around. My inlaw's already buy Logan the zoo pass, so I was thinking maybe a children's museum membership? Other than that I'm stumped. Poor 2nd children! Oh, and it doesn't help that he has a November birthday so I'm looking for a bunch of ideas at once.

Just an FYI on the Children's Museum pass. I was going to get one for my niece and the membership starts the day it is purchased, unlike the zoo where you can buy a gift certificate.

    NOTE:

All memberships, including gift memberships, begin on the date of purchase.

Any time you visit the Museum, the admission portion of your sale may be applied towards the purchase of a membership the day of your visit. If a membership is purchased within seven (7) days after the date of your receipt, $10 of the admission you paid can be applied. You must present your receipt to receive this discount.

Membership to Children's Museum of Pittsburgh is not reciprocal with membership to Carnegie Science Center (Pittsburgh, PA) or the McKinley Presidential Library & Museum(Canton, OH).

  • We're trying to scale back this year. G has way too much.

He's already talking about his list for Santa and has mentioned the following things:
    Zippy Sac
    "big boy" Legos
Magna tiles/Magnaformers (there are so freaking expensive, if anyone has any leads on where/how to get them cheaper please share!)
We'll probably get him a few books.

My parents go nuts. He's their only grandchild.

I don't, but I try to get the kids stuff that they can play with together.  For example, they each are getting a play doh set.  When they were smaller, they'd each get a Fisher Price Little People Set.  Last year they each got a different "Hot Dots" set.

I also like to get the kids things that I don't have to find another bin/place/home for, in other words, I try to build off what they already play with/have, and it helps make old stuff seem new again.

For DD-New barbies, new breyer horses, etc.

For DS-More imaginext stuff; v-tech go-go; matchbox cars, etc that I can dump into our existing bins after Christmas.

Zulily has Magnaformers right now.  I'm not sure how the price compares to elsewhere.

  • DD is getting a wooden stool with her name cut in it.  (DS has one.)  She'll be 11 1/2 months...so she may also be getting a "big girl" car seat.  (She doesn't know she'd get one anyway!)

DS is getting a desk chair.  We have a toy room (hallway really) between our living room and DH's office.  It desperately needs cleaned out, so I hope to do that and then get a chair for the counter space that is in there.   I've been saving pencils, and I'll get him some getting ready for kindergarten books.  He likes school so far, and I think he'll dig having his own space. (Now we will just have to keep it clean in there!)  "Santa" has also been keeping his letter pictures from school and will hang them above his desk as a surprise!   I have already planted the chair idea, and we keep talking about it, so I hope he's excited.
