Why Ben Carson is Running for POTUS

Every night on his FB page, Dr. Ben Carson answers up to 3 questions from voters who have contacted him. Here is last night's (11/4) message...it is regarding his lack of political experience, but it sums up pretty well his overall stance on why he's running.

"Tonight, going through all of your questions, I wanted to touch on a few issues that seem to be asked by many people.

I would like to deal with one question tonight in some detail. The issue is experience. Several people ask what they should tell their friends when people say “I like Carson but he has no political experience”.

You are absolutely right — I have no political experience. The current Members of Congress have a combined 8,700 years of political experience. Are we sure political experience is what we need. Every signer of the Declaration of Independence had no elected office experience. What they had was a deep belief that freedom is a gift from God. They had a determination to rise up against a tyrannical King. They were willing to risk all they had, even their lives, to be free. Today we find ourselves with an entire class of politicians. No one in Philadelphia, during that summer our nation was born, dreamed that service was a career with a pension. America was the land of the Citizen Statesmen. They were merchants, lawyers, farmers — and yes, even doctors. They were willing to stand for freedom. Today, the political class stands in the way, not for the people. They demand pensions and perks. This is not what our Founders envisioned for America. I spent my life treating very ill children. Over 15,000 times I gave my all to prolong their lives. I was blessed to do it. But when it came time for me to retire, I simply could not sit back any longer. These children became my family. What our government is doing to them is outrageous. I am prepared to risk all that I have to try and make a difference in their future. I built one of the nation’s best medical centers. I served for two decades on the boards of Costco and Kellogg. I built a national scholarship program.

My experience is very different than what we have come to expect. I grew up poor. I know what it is like to be homeless and hungry. I know the pain of poverty. I also know that education and a mother’s love can be the path out of dire poverty. I know what it is like to see water fountains you are not allowed to drink out of because of your skin color. I also know that once you peal back the skin, the brain is the same no matter what your skin color or continent you live on. I know that victimhood is a trap. I know that it is our Christian responsibility to offer those less fortunate a hand up. I know my faith is strong and my ego is small.

I know that my path to the White House is different than most. But I also know I bring all of the pain and joy, the success and failure, the lessons learned through love and sorrow in my life’s journey. Bill Clinton was famous for saying “I feel your pain” — well, I have walked in your shoes.

I do not have political experience, I have a life journey. A journey that not only made it possible for me to relate to so many different people, but also one where time and time again I was told I would fail, only to succeed. My candidacy is different, that I grant you. I have neither Donald Trump’s money or Jeb Bush’s political network. However, I wouldn't trade a single child I treated for all of Trump’s money. While I admire the Bush family’s dedication to service, I too served — nights, weekends, holidays, birthdays and anniversaries with severely injured patients were my public service.

I didn’t go to embassy cocktail parties or beg lobbyists for money. I spent night after night in a quiet, sterile room trying to save the life of a small child. That was my life’s service. This is my life’s experience. What I have is a lifetime of caring, integrity and honesty. I have experienced the American Dream. No where in the world, other than America, could a man whose ancestors were slaves, rise to become a leading brain surgeon and one day seek the Office of President.

The very fact that I am running is testament to the greatness of America. If all you want is political experience then I cannot be your candidate.

Thank you for staying up with me.

Goodnight,
Ben"

  • I just can't get past the typo. But I also will say my parents know a US senator who was elected as a Tea Party reformer. He is incredibly frustrated how Washington politics works. I honestly think soemone with no political experience has no business being President right now.

I have to agree with this as well.

Sorry, I cannot find the typo to which you are referring. I have a guess what it may be.

And anyway, he writes these at night once he is done with the day's work and travels. I'll cut him some slack - the guy is probably exhausted. I think you're straining gnats - seriously, this guy is brilliant and yet you are focusing on going after one typo? Also, many smart people do not have perfect spelling or grammar.

Also, we have Obama as POTUS now, How's that for experience? A one term senator for his first POTUS campaign oh and he missed a significant portion of his votes (meaning he wasn't even present). So we as a nation elected less than one term senator who's major leadership experience prior to any office was as a community organizer.

At least Dr. Carson has board experience for 2 major companies, started up his own foundations, and led a major department at a global hospital.

  • He used pealing instead of peeling in the fifth paragraph. But that's not why I don't support him. I just don't think he has the personality to succeed as President. He is too reserved. That combined with his lack of experience make him not the choice for me. Obama did serve for several years in the Illinois Senate before becoming a US Senator. Illinois politics is a hot mess so I would definitely say Obama has more experience than Carson. And he has a law degree and taught constitutional law. On paper he was way more qualified than Carson even before he became President.

I completely agree with all of this.  I don't dislike Carson- in fact, I was thinking of supporting him until I heard him unable to explain his positions and policies in debates.  He always seems out of his league.  If he can't handle explaining himself in a debate, then he isn't qualified to be president.

you crack me up lol.  Are you a writer?  I agree with you.  I think Carson is too quite and doesn't seem like the bold leader we need right now.

President Obama was a constitutional law professor too. A little more pertinent to politics than brain surgery.
I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.
  • I don't think Obama's lack of experience is what made him a sucky president.  In fact, he's accomplished a lot of what he said he would, so I think he had plenty of political experience.

Still, the fact that Carson has no political experience worries me.  It particularly worries me in a general election.  I need to vote for someone electable.
  • It never ceases to amaze me, even after living here for half my life, being a citizen for over a decade, that not having political experience would make you think believe someone could hold the highest political office in the land. That's like someone who hasn't been to medical school being head of surgery.

I know right?  I guess there is another debate this week.  I've already decided not to get invested in the R candidates until they weed thru them.  There are still way too many IMO.

I agree. There are too many candidates. There's another debate tomorrow night I believe it's on the Fox business channel.

  • It's not going to get cut down until after NH and Iowa.  Then there will be a mass exodus.  We're 3 months out from NH, so it feels close to me, but it's still a long, long road.

BTW, I MIGHT be having a candidate at my house in the next couple months!  I'm not saying who yet, but it's one of top tier folks.  I haven't 100% decided and it will ultimately come down to scheduling, but I might be hosting a house party meet and greet.  They're pretty common up here and a great way to talk to candidates one on one.

I agree. I think Paul will be in until at least NH. At least tonight's debate stage is smaller (Huckabee and Christie got moved to the early debate and Graham and Pataki got eliminated from the debate stage altogether).

I'd say specifically for Paul and Christie, NH is their do or die state.  I think some of the others may drop after Iowa because they are centering in on Iowa more, but Paul and Christie have centered in on NH and aren't doing super badly here in polls.  We tend to like northeast brashness here (Christie) and overall we're a very libertarian state on both sides (Paul)
  • I, too, am a bit hesitant about a POTUS with no political experience.  However, I think Carson's response to that question was exceptional.
