Re: What the hell is going on in Louisiana, short+sassy?

  • My general response to that question is, "(Sigh), hell if I know."

Darn it!  I can't listen to the audio portion here at work.  But thanks for bringing this to my attention.  I like the Daily Show, though I don't regularly watch it, and I am curious to hear this bit.  I'll listen to it tonight and report back.

For what its worth, John Bel Edwards won the gubernatorial race on Saturday.  Unusual because this is a very red state and he was the Democratic candidate, though he is a conservative Democrat.  Vitter was just running at a bad time.  Our current governor and recently dropped out of the GOP race is Bobby Jindal and he is pretty much despised here.  His approval rating is only 20% and I think Vitter got caught up a bit in the "Jindal hate".

Are you referring to Vitter's prostitution scandal?  Oh yeah, that's our guy, lol.  It's actually old news, he was busted years ago in some D.C. Madam scandal.  But was still re-elected last time he ran for Senate.  However, JB Edwards made sure to bring that mud sling back to life for the governor's race.

There's an old saying down here in NOLA..."We like our politics the way we like our rice...dirty."

Bahaha!  I find LA politics always confusing.  That's the state where there isn't a straight winner and loser for US Senate and/or Representatives, right?  Like they have to have a majority or something?  I'm always watching the news during general election debates and LA always seems up in the air because of their system.

I have to admit I don't know the ins and outs, but its something like that.  The same is true for the gubernatorial race.  The first election for governor was a few weeks ago.  But none of the candidates got enough votes to be governor.  So then it was narrowed to the two choices who got the most votes...Vitter and Edwards.  The run-off election was this last Saturday and Edwards won.

We are also the only state with Napoleonic laws.  I have little idea what that means, lol.  But people in the legal profession make a big deal about it and say it is so different.  But, for a lay person living a day to day life, the only difference I have seen is in regards to spouses and credit.  Here, even if a husband/wife is taking out a loan solely on their own, their spouse has to sign off that they are aware a loan is being taken out in their spouse's name and will allow that to happen.

I actually find that kind of disturbing, lol.

  • Run-off!  That's the phrase I was trying to remember!  So strange, but yay for state's rights.

Yeah, we definitely march to our own tune down here, but that's just part of our charm :), lol.

We are also the only state that is divided by parishes instead of counties.
