Upgrading Old Gas Fireplace?

Hello, everyone!! We're currently in the home buying process, and we've put in an offer for a home with an old style gas fireplace. It's one of those where there's a little hole in the wall, you put in a key and turn to control how much gas is getting to the fireplace. I'd like to upgrade it to one of the types where you flick a light switch, the fire comes on, flick again, no more fire.

I honestly don't know the first thing about fireplaces or how those things work, so I have no idea if that is feasible or not. I assume it wouldn't be too hard, because it's already got the gas there, surely it's just a matter of installing the switch and some sort of valve? Honestly, I just don't know enough.

So for anyone with expertise, how difficult is that type of upgrade, and what type of cost ranges do you generally see for something like that?

Thanks so much!
