Donations

What charities donate to causes 100% or close to 100%? I want to chose a charity or two to donate to but am not sure which ones to trust. I am especially interested in animal charities.

Re: Donations

  • You can check www.charitywatch.org to vet charities before choosing them.  I have found that local charities donate more of their earnings than national ones, but I do still like to support some national charities.  Please keep in mind that most of these still have people who get paid, and likely have some overhead costs, so 100% is probably pretty hard to achieve.
  • I'd check Guidestar.org, where you can search for and review an organization's 990 tax form.  (Charity Watch and Charity Navigator are good for national organizations, but not very comprehensive when it comes to local charities.)  And I concur with @dragonstarjk, all organizations will have some sort of administrative cost.  I would honestly be wary of a non-profit that would make a claim of 100%.  Anything over 90% is considered good.

  • Thanks everyone! The info is helpful. I'll check it out.

Just found charitywatch.com The site lists all the top rated charities.
  • Do look at guidestar too.  The 990's are really informative.  I pull them for every charity I donate to, and I pay pretty close attention to how much their execs are being paid, etc.  With the exception of some obligatory "Hey I'm raising money for X" (sneeze: United Way), I only donate to charities that spend 90% or more of their money on their mission.  And frankly, I prefer 95%.

Gospel for Asia puts 100% toward the actual charity. You can buy animals for families to raise to get food from as well as to have babies and sell offspring as well as a host of other ways to contribute.

There's the link to the animals, but you can also choose other things like tools, water filters, etc..

Sounds like a great charity!  But I laughed when I first (mis)read this and, for a couple seconds was like, "Wait, what?  They sell their babies (as in human babies)?"
