Because we talk too much about Trump - Hilary

Theres an update on her email scandal.  Link Below

I think she won't stop running and will somehow get the D Nom.  DH on the other hand thinks towards the summertime she will drop out of the race for "health reasons" and Biden will squeeze in - He says she is running just to take the news off of her email scandal.. Me - I won't vote for trump or hilary.

  • #teamHillary. Love her.
HeartlandHustle | Personal Finance and Betterment Blog
  • The DNC will force her down everyone's throat because she has the best chance of winning a general election.  Bernie doesn't have a prayer in a general election.  Biden couldn't come in the summer- he would miss all the primaries.  I have heard that the DNC bylaws say that someone else can be chosen at the convention who wasn't on the ballot though.  That's interesting.  Don't know if it's true.

I like Hilary better than Bernie at the end of the day.
  • (Sigh) I like Bernie.  I really do.  He wants such great things and I trust that he genuinely wants to do what is best for the country.  I want to live in a country where all the "good for society" things he wants to do can come true.  But, that is the problem. Obviously money is not endless...not for people, not for countries.  Hard choices always need to be made and we're just not in a place to even remotely be able to afford many of the things he wishes to achieve.

Hillary doesn't even deserve to visit the Whitehouse , let alone live there. A very guilty person... Travelgate, Watergate, Clinton foundation issues, Benghazi lies and deaths, email scandal, etc.

Hillary....LOTUS...... LIAR OF THE UNITED STATES lol

I like Bernie but he needs to take basic economics.

I kinda like him too - I would just be nervous how he would fund all these free things he wants.

America would collapse. The same thing that is happening in California and New York would happen on a national scale. Wealthy individuals will leave the country, just as they are leaving California and New York. Not only that, but you would see a rapid departure of companies from the United States to more friendly tax environments. And, Bernie can't stop them unless he throws out the Constitution and invokes a dictatorship.

yeah that makes sense.  That would truly suck!  I watched the Dem debate and it was interesting watching hilary take jabs at what he wants for health care - he wants universal care obviously.  She wants obama care to stay and let us tweak it to make it better.

  • Nothing is free.  Someone always pays.  We'd end up in the same financial situation that most European countries find themselves.  Also, not only is nothing free, but I would never want the government to start taking over more programs.  They do nothing well or efficiently because government is the ultimate, unchecked, monopoly.  And at the end of the day, you end up sacrificing more than money- you start sacrificing freedoms.  It's the golden rule.  Those with the gold rule.  If that's the government, then the ultimate, unchecked, monopoly rules.

Never, ever.  This is the only reason why I am a Republican because at my core I disagree with socialist philosophies.  I know enough about basic economics, and a ton more about history to know that this doesn't work.  Period.

I think it's interesting that people here keep saying they "like Bernie" but disagree with his policies.  Then what do you like about him?  That he seems honest about the fact that he'll spend us into oblivion and take away private enterprise?

I like his energy and that he seems honest. I just don't think his policies. While they sound great, they will hurt the United States. We'll be even further in debt.

I like that at least he is passionate about what he believes.  I also like the fact that he has less baggage than Hilary,  If I was a dem I would probably vote for him.

Like @catsareniice1 and @vlagrl29 mentioned, I like that he seems honest and that he genuinely wants to do what he thinks is best for the country...not necessarily what is best for his own personal popularity.

"A politician thinks of the next election.  A statesman thinks of the next generation."  Whether he is right or wrong...and, alas, I think he's wrong...he is at least thinking of the next generation.  And I admire and respect that.

I also do agree with some of his policies "as is".  And some of his policies if we lived in a perfect world, but the money isn't there so they can't and shouldn't happen.  I lean more toward socialism than probably the average American.  But I certainly recognize it seems to have gone too far in some European countries and we don't want to end up in the same boat.

I was just mentioning to my H the other day that pretty much everyone in the U.S. agrees there should be some social programs and some safety net...heck, if you think about it, public education is a social program.  But there is a line where it crosses from benefitting our society as a whole to being detrimental to our society.  However, every single citizen probably has a different opinion of where that "line" is, lol.  And that's the debate.  That's the treading water carefully.

  • short+sassy  I think you are describing the communist utopia as the thing you wish the world was so that this would all actually work.  Unfortunately, it has been proven many times throughout time that this just goes against human nature and doesn't work.

And I'd rather have the government out of my life.  I don't want or need social programs personally and I think I run my life better than my government could do for me.

Also, I think Bernie and Trump and are different sides of the same coin.  People think they are being "honest" because they say things that are untraditional for a politician, but they are telling people what they want to hear.  People just want to hear extreme things this election cycle.  Both are telling people what they want to hear without any practicalities to HOW.  That is typical political bull just a different brand of it.
  • I disagree BlueBird. Bernie has been saying this stuff for years. I don't think he is telling people what they want to hear. He genuinely believes in what he is saying. And yes he is a socialist, not a communist. As a country we like social programs even if it is 'anti-American' to admit it. Two of the biggest parts of the budget are SS and Medicare. And no politician will dare to touch those because no one wants to lose their benefits.
  • Oh and Bernie intends to tax the crap out of the rich to pay for his stuff. He has been pretty open about that.
  • smerka said:

That is what scares me. The rich are going to take their businesses elsewhere. Doctors, lawyers, surgeons are not going to feel the need to put in any effort.

I agree with this. I like social programs to an extent. They are needed in circumstances like SS and unemployment. God forbid dh and I couldn't work. I would want food stamps as well.

    Agreed!
  • True, he has been saying this stuff for years.  And it's obviously impractical because he's gotten nothing done as a Senator because even Democrats think he's extreme.  You have to admit though that what a lot of people like about Trump and Bernie is that they are both bombastic and angry.

First off, SS was suppose to be a voluntary savings account.  That's how it was sold to the people.  Which of course was a huge lie.  Regardless, I wouldn't want to create more programs like SS and Medicare... they're poorly managed programs because the government is bad at this.  Now we're in deep with both those programs, so there is no going back, only hopes of saving the programs and bettering them.  But I wouldn't want to create more poorly managed and executed programs.  We all sit back and bitch about the government and politicians (who run government and therefore control us the more we let them pay for stuff) and how ridiculous it all is.  So why would we want to hand over more money for them to create more bureaucracy?

Remember if you look at the political spectrum, socialist is right next to communist.  Socialists are just less extreme communists.  Communism is what happens when socialism goes to far.  I'm not crazy for bringing up communism in this discussion.  The core philosophies are very similar.  And all I brought up was the concept of the communist utopia, which was the philosophy that communist societies tried to model their governments after, but they couldn't manage to follow even the original philosophy because it went so against the practicalities of life.  I didn't compare Bernie to a communist.

Bernie seems well meaning, but I think he's off his rocker.  He has no idea HOW this would actually work just like Trump has no idea HOW his ideas would work.  To me that's political bull.  Maybe that's just ignorance. I don't know.

Listen it's all about balance.  At my core, I believe in limited government.  I believe government has it's place, but I believe that free enterprise betters everyone more than government.  It's the only reason why I vote Republican because I'm very socially liberal.  Not everyone agrees.  But as long as we continue this debate, we will always have balance.  It's the debate that is the ultimate check and balance of our country.
  • ^^^ Yes I totally agree with this. Thank you for articulating that for me.

Not only was SS supposed to be a voluntary savings account, it was meant to be a buffer to retirement savings, not to encompass ALL of someone's retirement savings.

Yes, socialism and communism are very close relatives. And, we have real historical proof that both fail when it comes to running nations.

  • Speaking of SS, that is a hot button issue for me.  While I understand why it was started and can see the positives, I hate and cannot stand the way the program runs because it so often robs people of their money and gives nothing back.

Let me give an example from my own life.  I have a serious medical condition.  It is unlikely I will live to 65.  So, what happens to the s**loads of money I've put into the system over my lifetime if I don't live long enough to collect any of it?  It just disappears into the system with not even one dime of it being a benefit to either myself or my heirs.  How is that fair?  Trust me.  That SS money I will never get, would sure come in handy RIGHT NOW to help me pay for the $400/month in prescriptions/dr. visits I have that neither my insurance (high deductible plan) nor the government pay for.

In my world, SS would morph into a system where people are still forced to put aside money to supplement their retirement...but it would always be THEIR money.  In THEIR account.  That they can't withdraw, but can manage.  And, in the event of anyone having an untimely death before their retirement, that money than becomes part of their estate.

I've never thought of this but it makes total sense to me. This would be more beneficial and the govt couldn't bankrupt it.

This is a good point also.  For decades, the SS admin. had a surplus because all the working baby boomers far surpassed the number of retired people.  But, over the years, those surpluses continually got raided by other government programs and agencies.

Now that lack of foresight is coming home to roost as we enter the long stretch of boomers retiring.  With every passing year, it is the double edged sword of more people receiving SS with fewer people working to support it.

  • You'd think the government would have realized that all the surplus was coming from a generation that would one day be wanting their money back.

As a millennial, I've been told my whole life that I will never get my SS money back. It's just another tax out of my paycheck.

  • SS money is LOOOOONG gone. It's gone. It's been spent.
