Hi MM-ers, I'm on the fence about something.
H and I intentionally over-withheld on our taxes this year because we weren't positive if my LLM reimbursements were going to be taxed. I was pretty sure they shouldn't be, but I couldn't get anybody to give me a straight answer on it.
Anyway, they weren't taxed (sweet), and the result is that we have the biggest refund ever coming to us this year. We didn't budget for it when planning our 2016 goals, so I think we're just going to stick it in savings for now.
I'm thinking of using a little bit of it to buy H a piece of furniture for his birthday/Christmas at the end of the year. We found a 1920's standing desk from an old print shop at an antique store near my parents' house several months ago. He absolutely loved that thing, and he is still talking about how cool it was (I agree). We didn't buy it then because we weren't sure about our tax situation at that time.
I had my mom do some recon for me last week, and it's still in the shop. The dealer said she would take $400 for it, and my parents offered to pick it up/store it until I'm ready to give it to him.
My H would absolutely not notice if I sent $400 to my parents to pay them back for the desk. I know he would love it. But I've never spent that much on a gift for him before.... and actually, I don't think I've spent that much period without talking to him first.
What does MM think? What's the most expensive surprise gift you've bought your SO?
Re: Most expensive gift you have bought your SO?
To answer the original question, the most I ever spent was around $450 for a piece of dive equipment. But, it wasn't a surprise. He helped pick it out, which is common for us.
The most expensive thing I've done for dh was to send him on a hog hunt for his Christmas present. It was $500 plus he needed some new gear. It was something he had been wanting to do for a while. I squirreled some of it out of the budget without him noticing, and I think I paid for a bit of it by selling crap around the house or something. I don't remember exactly, but I was happy I was able to pay for it without him noticing immediately.
1. You know he loves it.
2. You're going to have money in the budget you weren't planning on having.
3. The rest of your financial house is in order.
4. $400 isn't a crazy amount of money.
To answer your question, a few years ago I bough H a $350 cooler. Yes, a cooler. Yikes, I don't want to talk about it. Haha.
It is a Yeti! H doesn't ever want for anything. Everything he ever wants, he saves his allowance and he buys it. The stupid Yeti is the only thing he has ever wanted that he didn't buy himself. I loved getting it for him for that reason, but I almost fell over when I bought it.
The most expensive thing I ever bought DH was a $150 mandolin when we were dating. No, he doesn't play lol.
I also say go for it! It sounds like you both love the piece and it would be a great gift!
I spend way too much on H's gifts. I really just love to buy people things they love, especially H. I think the most I ever spent was either his xbox360 or his Wii plus games. I can't remember how much they came out to, but they were bought separate years.

I say go for it as well...you will have it for years to come!
I don't even remember the most $ gift I've ever given H....it probably would've been between $100-$200 dollars max....but now we don't really buy each other gifts, we buy joint gifts for the house.
Just looked up the Yeti, and it seems pretty awesome. Probably not an imminent purchase but I'd love that for camping. I worry a lot about food safety with our milk/eggs/meat.
I've never owned a yeti, but we have a horizon soft cooler that is pretty awesome and a lot cheaper. Their customer service has always been great too. Plus a life time guarantee against leaks. (I do not work for them and I hope this isn't against the rules, sorry if it is!!) Usually we can get 2 days out of the ice in the cooler when boating if we stay out.
You may want to check them out if you're looking for a less expensive option! They have all sizes too.
ETA: They're still expensive for a cooler, but not quite yeti expensive. lol
