"Grown up" inexpensive home goods?

I just turned 30 and my hubby is 34 and I'm tired of looking like I live in an IKEA showroom/dorm room. All of our furniture is either falling apart or dangerously cheap. I want to make our apartment feel like a HOME with quality furniture and decor. I love the French Countryside/Traditional design aesthetic. Anything ornate and/or romantic! However we are on a super strict budget (my husband gets VA disability and I only work 30 hours a week). Aside from DIYing things, where are some of the best home good places I can accumulate quality pieces over time that won't break the piggy bank? TIA!

Unfortunately, with furniture, you mostly get what you pay for.  I find the exception to be Home Goods, but you can never determine what they will have on a given day.  It's a give and take, but I've gotten some great pieces there and they're held up for years with no problem.  I have an upholstered wingback chair that I got probably 15-20 years ago there, I use it all the time, and it still looks brand new.
  • Another store that's along the same lines as Home Goods is At Home. Plenty of stylish furnishings to choose from and decent prices. You also might want to checkout Wayfair and Overstock--good online options and little to no shipping charges.

You also might want to consider your local donations stores. If you're diligent, you can score quality furniture pieces for next to nothing! As long as the piece has "good bones", you can always have it reupholstered when your budget allows.

    Hope this helps!
  • Check out estate sales, and not necessarily garage sales. In our area it's not uncommon that when a family member passes (usually in well off families) they take the items they want and then have a professionally ran estate sale for the rest of the furniture and décor in the home. Since these sales usually happen in well off neighborhoods, you find some really good quality pieces.
  • Hi, I’m from Fredericton. Recently I was planning to change my living room sectionals and dining room furniture set. I wished to purchase them at a  minimal  cost . Luckily I got both the living room sectionals and dining room furniture at low cost. I could even opt for same day delivery!
  • I second the home goods suggestion.  They have great deals if you hit them at the right time.  I would also recommend Costco if you have a membership.  We found a desk there for a really reasonable price, and their inventory is always changing.  If you can find what you like on Wayfair, go for it.  They have a ton of inventory and ship large items for free.  We also go to an overstock warehouse for our big items (couch, coffee table, bed frame).  They are items from the expensive furniture stores, but usually way cheaper.  You just might have to dig a little bit.  Good luck!
