Politics and your DH

A text conversation with my BFF got me thinking about politics and DH. I asked her who her DH likes and she said, "I don't know, he hasn't said."

How many of you do or don't discuss politics as a regular topic with your DH? I was sort of surprised she said she didn't know...in our home politics is a pretty regular conversation.

How do you all handle it? And, if you don't discuss it a lot, do you at least know who your DH favors?

Re: Politics and your DH

  • DH and I talk about politics. Most of our conversations is trying to figure out why so many of our extended family members love Trump. We avoid the topic the topic like the plague with our extended family though who seem to love to talk about it. Once I posted an article about the Syrian Refugees from a Christian perspective and my grandpa told me that God declared all the Muslims were evil and they would be the ones to bring about the end times. He also expressed his disappointment that I had let "all the people at universities" corrupt my mind. Great grandpa. Glad you value educated minds...

This is why we don't talk about about it.

Bolded. The Bible does not mention Muslims. There was no Muslim religion yet when the Bible was written. The Islamic religion came about in hundreds of years after the final book of Biblical scripture was penned.

However, the Islamic religion does profess its own version of the end times in which they cause other religions to convert to Islam and in which they destroy the cross and other religious symbols. It's why ISIS is destroying all the religious relics in the Middle East. They are trying to bring about the end times.

  • Mostly he listens to me rant.  He's not super into politics, but he likes to hear what I think.  He's voting for either Christie or Rubio- he says he's 50/50
  • DH follows it WAY more than I do.  He usually updates me on all the news breaking politics.  He is also more conservative than I am - I consider myself more in the middle of party lines.  He is for Trump only because Trump is a businessman and DH wants the economy to get better like it was before the crash.  He says he has to work harder to get jobs than he did before the crash.  Me - I'm still undecided.  I'm guessing Rubio would be my best bet.

  • My H mostly listens to me rant as well. He's interested in politics and will have some discussions about it, but he acknowledges I pay way more attention and get much more passionate about it. We talk about it sometimes but I think we end up with more interesting discussions when there's someone else in the conversation who has different political values than we do. That's when I hear more of his opinions come out.

I'm not sure who he'll vote for. Probably Gary Johnson if he remains the only 3rd party candidate. H has a thing voting 3rd party in order to help increase their vote percentage. Something about getting federal funding/acknowledgement/something?? if they win a certain percentage of voters.
  • One of my undergraduate degrees is in Political Science, so I'm a bit more interested and knowledgable than my husband. He leans Libertarian (except when it comes to gun control) and I pretty closely align with the Democratic agenda (though I'd prefer a single payer healthcare system over the ACA).

  • Visiting from MM...hi!

My H and I talk about politics a lot and generally agree on most issues.  We both consider ourselves Democrats but are open minded and have voted Republican locally in the past.  This year we agree on the same candidate, although H is more enthusiastic about him than I am.  I have reservations and may yet change my mind.

I guess I can see not knowing who your H favors if one or both of you is just not that interested.  Otherwise, I would find it unusual.
  • My H and I don't discuss politics that much.  When we do, we are typically on about the same page.  We discuss local politics and issues much more often.  Every once in awhile we'll disagree about something and that is almost more fun because we debate well together.  We respect each other's intelligence and opinion, so it is a good opportunity to really listen to the opposing side's view.

For example, our latest "disagreement" is a hot button local issue where there are four statues of Confederate big wigs that some groups want to take down.  He thinks they are of important historical significance and should stay.  Whereas I don't understand why traitors who attacked my country still have their "stuff" hanging around after over 150 years, lol.  Not that those statues are even that old, which is what makes it even crazier.
