Republican Debate Last Night

I missed it.  It's on a Saturday, so stupid.

I did tape it, but after reading about how badly Rubio did, I think I don't want to see it.  I'll just get upset.  I'm really angry with Christie and Bush for going after Rubio in the way he has.  It's so damn desperate.  Their big means of attack is that Rubio hasn't been in NH answering real question.  I have attended Christie and Rubio events and both answered my questions clearly and neither gave me canned responses.  It's such a bull shit line of attack.  True that Christie and Bush have put all their eggs in the NH basket and Rubio is looking past NH, so he hasn't made quite as many appearances, but he's been here every week for months just like everyone else.

I also read that Trump attacked the audience when they booed him saying they were all donors and the only reason they didn't like him was because he didn't want their money.  I want to be perfectly clear here, because I know how the ticketing process works for debates (at least in NH)- each candidate is given a certain number of tickets (so Trump had his own group there) and the rest are put into a random lottery.  Anybody who has ever had their name on any political list (sign up to get notifications for a candidate or such) was offered to have their name put in a lottery.  This isn't a stacked crowd of rich donors.  That's not how it works, but I'm afraid that once again, Trump lied and people won't know any better.

Did anyone else watch it?  What did you think?

Re: Republican Debate Last Night

  • I heard Rubio did bad and now I know trump wants to reverse the gay marriage thing and Cruz outed his half sister on heroin addiction and she is dead. I didn't watch it though. Just all things I've heard. I'm having a harder time supporting any of them at this point.

  • What are your predictions for NH - I'm going for trump and Bernie. I saw the national polls for Hillary and Bernie getting much closer
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • I watched maybe a half hour towards the end. They were talking about the VA, women serving in combat roles, and negotiating with terrorists. Everyone wants to increase the size of the military and no one wants to pay for it.
  • And what happened with the introductions? I was watching SNL and they were talking about it in their 'news' segment. It was not a skit. It made Ben Carson look like a bumbling idiot

Here's the intro - what is going on with Ben carson?  Thought it was nice of Trump to stay behind with him.

  • I think Trump was confused too
  • So freaking weird...

NH predictions- Trump and Bernie 100%.  Assuming this debate doesn't negatively affect Rubio, Rubio in second.  Third is a toss up between Cruz, Bush, and Kasich.
  • Also, I'm afraid all Christie managed to do with his attacks was give Trump a larger win.  Here's why: Trump's lead has been slipping here in NH and Rubio's number have been proportionately going up. Meaning, Rubio has been stealing Trump support.  If Christie managed to knock down Rubio, those votes are going back to Trump.  They certainly aren't going to Christie.  Having watched enough clips, Christie looked very un-likeable, and his like-ability is his strongest asset.  He looked like a big bully and people don't like to vote for a big bully unless it's Trump.

Christie is out on Wednesday- that's my prediction.  Kasich and Bush have enough money to stay in through Super Tuesday.
  • wouldn't Ben drop out before Christie - that's how I see it going anyways.
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • Ben just cut a bunch of his staff so that would be my guess.
  • Christie is dead broke.  He's never polled well.  Carson collected a good chunk when he was doing well.  Also, I heard he cut his staff, but I also heard that since the Cruz scandal, that Carson's raised a lot of money.  So I don't know.
  • I'm still on this, but I thought of something else.  At Rubio's event, I didn't hear any canned lines that I've heard him use in debates or ads.  Christie's opening speech was word for word an ad that is playing constantly here.  It's also comprised of a lot of the lines he uses in debates.  I don't really care if a politician has some lines they fall back on, but Christie is sounding like such a desperate hypocrite.
  • I wasn't able to watch it but I feel the same way. Christie and Bush have ZERO chance of being the Republican nom. All they did was give Trump a bigger win, because like you said, Rubio was moving up in New Hampshire. I think it's about time that Christie, Bush, Kasich, and Carson bow out and let the votes go to candidates who actually have a chance. I have a feeling most of the people supporting these candidates won't go for Trump when they drop out, so by staying in, they just help Trump win more by splitting the vote.

My new favorites after watching it are Rubio and Kasich.

Christie ticked me off the most at the last debate.
  • I was still wavering between Christie and Rubio a bit and Christie just pushed me right to Rubio.  I'm a solid Rubio supporter now.  I put a yard sign up for Rubio.  I am going to his rally tomorrow night after the election to watch his speech.

Let me know what you think of his speech. It's weird being in California because the only opportunities we have to see candidates is really at debates. No one is calling us, no yard signs or bumper stickers are up yet, there are no candidate rallies yet.
  • And you won't have a lot of them once they get there either.  We take our job of vetting candidates in NH very seriously, but it's not fair that we get such personal experience with them when others don't.  Most people I know won't vote for someone they haven't met or met even a few times.  They have lists of questions and thoroughly question candidates.

Rubio is a beautiful orator and no, he doesn't use a teleprompter and often doesn't have notes.  He is very much "off script".  He actually just sounds like that when he speaks.  I've heard him sound just as smooth and practiced being asked very difficult questions as he does in a debate or in a planned speech. He needs to show more passion when he speaks.  Maybe then people will stop thinking of him as robotic or scripted.

  • ^^I completely believe it. He probably does have a few phrases memorized...that's called good speaking skills and it's not like the other candidates don't do the same thing. All of them have small scripted blurbs for debates they want to get in.

This alone would turn me right off of Christie.  How do you forget about a major terrorist attack? Okay, so in a "live" situation an easy slip of the
tongue.  But he has an ad where he says the same thing, how did nobody catch that mistake?  I'm sure that 9/11 probably hit him harder since he lived in the area, but he is talking to people in NH.  People who probably have similar stories to his, but about the Boston marathon bombings.

Before I saw Christie in person, I thought I'd hate him.  In reality, I disagree with him on most issues, but he is charming in person and I was charmed.  He seems incredibly sincere and un-political in a good way.  I like that he's been a Republican governor in a liberal state and still managed to work with his Democratic congress.  To me that shows leadership.  I still think he's a good leader, but I realized he's quite political in all the worst ways.
  • We don't have TV so I didn't watch the Super Bowl. I watched the Rep debate instead on YouTube on Sunday night.

I think the weird thing about them standing off to the side at the start was that they couldn't hear properly whether or not their names had been called. The moderators even pointed that out.

For me, I'm still going for Carson. I was "okay" about Cruz but then the whole "Carson's dropping out" stuff happened and I don't entirely trust Cruz anymore. I do dislike that Rubio is a one term senator. To me that's too Obama all over again and too junior, combining that with his Gang of 8, and that he has missed so many votes...I cannot do Rubio.

Carson remains my #1. Cruz will be my #2. Rubio my #3.

You do realize Cruz is also a one term senator, correct?  Cruz and Rubio are the exact same age with the exact same years in the senate.

I know. I dislike that one term Senator thing. But the one thing I like about Cruz is his great record of defending the Constitution before the Supreme Court. I like that Constitutional experience of defending the founding document. To me, that stands above Rubio's record of experience.
  • One term senator doesn't bother me because I don't think it's the reason why we don't approve of Obama's job as president.  His lack of experience has nothing to do with it.  In fact, I fear what could have happened with more "experience".  He's pushed his agenda forward that he set out in his original campaign and been quite successful with implementation.  I don't like Cruz anymore because I think he's slimy and underhanded, but I don't dislike him because of his lack of years in Washington.

This is exactly the word I use to describe him!  Too funny.

  • I use creepy for Ted Cruz
  • Have you all seen the articles about what Ted Cruz's college "friends" had to say about him?
  • Have you all seen the articles about what Ted Cruz's college "friends" had to say about him?

I've seen them. Basically sounds like people didn't like his political beliefs...nothing new. And, that they often got rubbed the wrong way by his personality. Yep. Some people are tougher to get a long with.

I'm not really sure I'll stick it to a candidate based on what people from a few decades ago stated about him. He's 44 now. Let's say he spent time in school in his 20's. That's 2 decades ago. If people made decisions about me based on what I said/did in college, then that would be unfortunate because I've grown and changed a lot.

I don't like what happened with Carson's campaign and for that reason I'm leery of Cruz. His rhetoric about faith and religion doesn't bother me. I get what he means there.

  • But no one has come out saying they like him personally except his family. Nobody likes him in the Senate and that's tough since there are so many egos there. You'd think someone would say he's an okay guy just to get his vote on something. Sure. Being President doesn't require that people like you, but if you are unlike able that doesn't bode well for foreign relations. I am just holding out hope that the trend of the winner in Iowa doesn't become President.
