Repub debate

Oh my gawd guys! So much arguing tonight. I think the winners were Carson and kasich because they didn't partake in the crazy. These debates are so much more entertaining than the dem debates. Thoughts?

Re: Repub debate

  • The parts I saw Carson didn't say much except go to my website to read my plan. I now think Rubio may be able to recover from his horrible performance last week.
  • yeah I think will Rubio will recover as well.  All that back and forth of arguing between the 4 made me exhausted.
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • Rubio did really well, but I don't know if anyone will pay enough attention.  We'll see.  If he gets 3rd in SC he'll be the comeback kid which would be good enough to pull him up.

Carson is just sad.  Come on, I know the arguing was terrible, but not arguing is not a reason to win.  Carson says nothing.  Kasich was ok, but he also didn't say much.

Bush did well for him, but that's not saying a lot.  Trump sounded horrible, but his supporters like him no matter what he says.

Last week I say this from the head of the SC GOP: “People in Iowa expect the candidate to trudge through the snow, do small meetings in diners,” he said. “In New Hampshire, they expect a candidate to come to their living room, sit on the sofa, have some coffee. In South Carolina, 700,000 people want to see how you take a punch.”

    I think that happened yesterday.
  • I was being sarcastic about those 2. Next debate I'm popping popcorn.

  • In terms of questions given this was by far the most compelling. I think the mod did great. I liked how the questions tended to get into the "what would you do if" more than other debates have. Kasich made that interesting point about "blue collar dems" who don't identify with the Hillary vs Bernie socialist discussion quite possibly voting republican if it's the right candidate. If Trump does well as a result of last night, I'll pee my pants. The majority of my watching him my jaw was dropped. I just cannot believe he's seriously there. Still. Bush did well in regards to fighting trump. He is right about when eminent domain is proper and when it's not. And he was right to back up his family. I gained respect for Rubio last night with the way he stepped up and pointed out W being better than Gore would have been when 9/11 occurred. He was on game. Not scripted. I have decided to be okay with his possible flipping on amnesty. So he is edging out Cruz for me. With Cruz, I want to like him. I love his Supreme Court experience and being a strict constitutionalist. But, with what happened with Carson and then trump said Cruz is making robo calls telling people trump is dropping out, who knows? Can't exactly believe trump either. I know a pp stated that Carson stayed out of the fight. Between him and Kasich I saw a lot of class. Trump is trump. Bush had to defend himself. And Cruz and Rubio just go in circles. It makes sense neither Carson nor Kasich would be involved. Good for them both. Yeah so still leaning Carson but now Rubio may be my number 2. Again, it comes down to trust. I like Carson because he is highly principled in his beliefs and doesn't away to PC popular opinion. He also stands firm on basic republican principles. Plus, he was an independent before deciding to run. There seems to be a good balance there. He has class. And I know he is calm.

I'm not a kind of person that likes heated debates and the going back and forth between Jeb and Trump.  Jeb always instigates it?  Why?  Rubio and Cruz had the same immigration argument as 2 debates ago.  I did get a kick out of Cruz randomly speaking in spanish when Rubio said he didn't know spanish.  At least Carson and Kasich brought it back down to calmness. That's what I meant when they won the debate.  I don't care for all that jibber jabber - I was shocked how crazy Trump got.  Didn't he claim bankruptcy like Jeb said?  But SC likes the candidate that does the most jabs I would say Trump may be on top.

The audience was driving me crazy between the booing and cheering.  STFU - it wasted talking time. I have to admit I like the fact that Trump is self financed and doesn't give a hoot when donors boo at him.  There was also a line that Carson said and I can't totally remember it but it really rang true to me. Something about the current economy.

The spanish thing was hysterical.  I thought Cruz proved Rubio's point by speaking with a terrible Anglo accent.  My husband, who can barely get by in a Spanish speaking country, speaks better.  The whole thing was great political theater though.

You have to realize, all this shit is silly.  Politics are ridiculous.  I think Trump takes things way too far, and as a result, he's brought the bar down too low, which is why we're shocked by the level brawling, but there is always brawling at this stage in the game, particularly when there are still so many candidates.

DONORS ARE NOT IN THE AUDIENCE.  It drives me insane that people believe the shit Trump says, and he's banking on them believing it.  Each candidate is only given a tiny portion of tickets, otherwise the tickets are put in random lotteries.  I've gone to televised debates and I know tons of people who go and they are regular, middle class people, who don't have money to donate.

Also, I'd rather have a more regular person be president who needs other people's money than a rich asshole who has zero idea how the rest of us live.

Bolded. I didn't know that about the audience not containing donors. Good to know. Thanks!!

I agree on the "regular person" thing. That's why I like Carson.

Jeb responds when Trump lays down an insult or a misrepresentation of Jeb's record. If Trump is correct on Jeb's record, he'd do a heck of a lot better to drop the rudeness and attitude and just make it about the facts then. At least this is the way I perceive the fight between them. Trump DID indeed take a few of his businesses through bankruptcy. Yes, it he did it legally and through the laws the government has set out, so he has a point that he just took advantage of what is available. But, he messed with thousands of people's lives AND it's sad he had to do that in the first place...so, it means the captain of the Trump Empire, ran aground a few ships. He can say it was perfectly fine all he wants, but many people - little guys and gals - got hurt in it. And, he does use eminent domain to build things that don't benefit the wider public. That's the main point Jeb makes when discussing this topic.
  • Of all things that kill me about Trump, his bankruptcies don't bother me at all.  That is how business is done.  He was right to declare and bankruptcy and get out when he could.  To me that has no baring on his ability to be president.  The rest of the shit though... I could make a never ending list of reasons why he would be a horrible president.

That audience was nuts - you can't believe there weren't any donors in that audience.  Here is an article I read today.  Link is below.

  • To me it just seems as if Trump has really rattled the RNC thoughout this entire process - it's almost like a 3 ring circus show.

Special interest groups do not get tickets.  Each candidate gets like 10 tickets a piece, so yes, there are some workers there- about 10 per candidate.  Sometimes, depending on the size of the venue, the more organized local GOP groups get tickets.  Local GOP groups are comprised of people supporting any number of different candidates and while they may be involved in politics, they are also not usually influential donors.  The rest are random Republicans.  I have no doubt that some of those people have donated to specific campaigns or support specific candidates, but these aren't groups of rich donors who influence elections.  I donated $100 to Rubio.  I guess that makes me a "donor", but not the ones who influence elections.  I could have gone to the debate last week if I had entered the lottery.

I know how this works because I've been in the audience.  There is always a large variety of supporters there.  The ones who dislike Trump happen to the be the majority and their dislike has nothing to do with the fact that Trump has refused to take their money.  If fact, because they are normal, average people, they could have donated to Trump if they wanted to.  He's taking individual donations and is actually majority funding his campaign with donation such as these.  I zero problem with this.  I have a huge problem with Trump lying to the American people claiming that influential, rich donors are booing him, which is completely a lie.  Average, normal people are booing him because they dislike him and his policies.  Trump just can't handle it when people don't like him.
  • The crowds get crazier the further into elections you get, especially when they have Trump as a villain.  I'd be booing and shouting right along with them if I was there.  It's all so bad at this point.

Thanks for clarifying. I guess I've never really paid this much attention to primaries before this year. After watching this last debate I would say Rubio is probably my best bet of who I feel I would vote for.

I'm starting to lean Rubio too. I was surprised to hear Trump bash the Bush family in South Carolina. They really like the Bushes there if I'm not mistaken. It could cost him votes.

Rubio was right about 9/11 being the fault of the Clinton administration.

Me too!!!  Of all places!  The other candidates really got under Trump's skin for the first time.  He lost his temper and showed some of his true colors.  I wish they would have forced him to do this earlier, but see, it took a blood bath to get Trump to show his true, liberal colors.  The Bush bash was only one example of Trump's endless gaffes last night.

I doubt it will do anything to hurt him however.  The Trump phenomenon is the most mysterious political phenomenon I have ever seen.  The worse he acts, the more people like him, regardless.

I think it has to do with anger.  I'm angry.  We're all angry.  Obama has done a fantastic job pitting us against each other and creating civil unrest.  But anger is such a weak emotion.  It clouds our vision and makes us incapable of seeing what is right in front of us.

I say good riddance.  I've come to realize that he attracts Dems and Reps almost equally, so a third party run would probably be a wash.  He's throwing a hissy fit because he didn't get a gold star at the debate and is blatantly LYING about the GOP "stacking the audience with donors and special interest groups".  That 100% does not happen.  It's infuriating to see such a plain lie, but if he is truly this pissed off that he wasn't the star and universally loved, have fun running third party.
  • If he does run 3rd party then you can count on Hillary getting in.

I wouldn't bank on it.  I think it'd be a wash.  I think he'd steal votes from both sides pretty evenly.  A Trump supporter is just that- a Trump supporter- not conservative or liberal.

I'm tired of having a gun held to my party's head by this ass.  I think it'd be a better situation than the one we're in right now where he's basically holding the GOP hostage with his threats of a third party run and winning with only 30% of the vote.

Let's think about this: About 30% of Republicans vote for him give or take.  The other 70% hate him.  30% of Republicans is a tiny percentage of the country.  Let him run against two real candidates as a third party candidate and see what happens.
  • Oh, you all, I apologize I didn't grab a pic of this when I saw it.

The last weekend of January was the start of the Mardi Gras season and there is a walking "Barkus" parade in the French Quarter.  It's a dog parade, where dogs and the owners usually dress in costume and "Barkus" is a take-off on a real Mardi Gras krewe called "Bacchus".

Anyway, the theme this year was politics (or something like that) and there was a group of three dogs wearing Trump-like toupee wigs.  They also wore little sandwich boards that said, "No More Cat Immigration".  It was absolutely hilarious.
