I have been to the Big Island, Kauai, and Oahu. I wouldn't go back to Oahu. It just isn't my thing. As a geologist, I love the Big Island, but I wouldn't want to be there while pregnant. The vog (volcanic fog) is dangerous for pregnant women and moves around with the wind. Plus walking on the fresh volcanic rock can be treacherous. Also there is no guarantee you will see lava as the volcano is always shifting. The Park's website updates everyday on where and what the lava is doing. It is a trip I would want to take my kids on when they are older.

RIC (Richmond, VA is the local airport).  I'm close enough to IAD (Dulles), but usually there is a flight from here to there and then wherever that it doesn't make sense to make the drive.

Glad you had a good time! We loved it when we went on a 7 day cruise there in 2007- can't wait to take the girls there when they're older and can handle the flight!
