Should I send a condolence?

This is a somber topic for a Friday...I recently found out a mentor from my college days passed away in 2014. We lost touch a few years ago after he left the job at the school. I knew he wasn't well when I tried to track him down to invite him to my wedding but never heard that he passed. My question is if it's too late to send a condolence to his wife? I only met her once or twice, but her husband was such a big help in me finding a professional career I'd love to let her know what an impact he had, but I don't want to druge up old feelings if she's had 2 years to heal.

Re: Should I send a condolence?

  • Personally, I think if you sent it saying what a big influence he was in your life that she'd love to get it.  It's always nice to know when your loved ones made a difference and were fondly remembered.

  • Find a nice card -- and enclose a note. I think a note saying what a great deal he mean to you as a mentor would make her day.:)
  • I absolutely agree with the other PPs.  Your card isn't going to re-open old grief.  She still lives with that grief everyday.  It's more manageable by now (or hopefully is) and, if anything, she will be comforted to know that his legacy and guidance still lives on in others.
  • I think sending a note would be a very nice thing to do.
