Niagara Falls and PEI/Nova Scotia
Looking to schedule a trip to Niagara Falls this summer (2016), thinking about 2 to 3 days in NY since we'll be driving and it's an 8 - 9 hour trip each way. Any recommendations of what to see or where to stay? I've heard the Canadian side is "better", can you stay on the US side and visit Canada (we have passports.)
As I've said on PP's my husband has to book his vacation weeks a year in advance so we're trying to plan 2017. My bucket list trips include PEI and/or Nova Scotia. Has anyone done a boat/ferry or cruise to this area? Looking to align with the 2016 dates in hopes they stay roughly the same. Also trying to figure out how much time off we need if we do a boat trip.
Thanks for all of your help!
Re: Niagara Falls and PEI/Nova Scotia
My husband and I go there about once a year. There is more to do on the Canadian side and a ton more hotels. On the American side there is only 1-2 hotels that truly give you a falls view. The next larges hotel on the American Side is the casino. On the American side there is a fort about 30 minutes away that can be cool and the parks along the falls are nice. But besides that, not much else to do. You can stay on the American side & go visit the Canadian side, but if you are going to go to that side more then one day, you're better of just staying there.
On the Canadian side there are a ton of hotels by the falls. They have a nice bus line that runs by all the hotels in that area & can take you down the falls and runs all the way down to the whirlpools and the butterfly place which is also a beautiful park. It's called the wego system. If you get a pass you can get on and off as much as you want for however many days the pass if for. The nice thing about this is that you don't have to worry about parking. There isn't much parking near the falls on the Canadian side. The maid of the mist is now run from the American Side if that is something you want to do. There is so much to see and do along the falls on the Canadian side from Ripleys, Hershey's Store, Planet Hollywood, and all sorts of fun tourist stores & lots of places to eat.
If you are looking to save money, check out groupon for Niagara Falls. You can sometimes get really good deals that way. That is how we did our honeymoon there. We got a room that normally goes for $230.00 a night for $75.00. Not sure if you can find deals like that during summer, we got that deal in off season. Just make sure to check the location of the hotel before you buy the groupon. There are some really great groupon deals, but for hotels that are several blocks away from the falls. Also check reviews for the hotels through different sites like Travelocity or priceline.
Another great way to go there and save money check out these sites, http://www.niagaraparks.com/niagara-falls-deals/?gclid=CMD8_P_Sx8sCFQUFaQodCnQLQQ

And if you are into wines, check out Niagara on the Lakes area, lots of great wineries in the area. One tip, when on the Canadian side (American is almost as bad), eating at resturants near the falls, you will pay a fortune. If you want to eat and get a good deal, go to the casino buffets. You don't have to gamble to eat there. The food is good, you can eat as much as you like, and the prices are so much better. We went to a TGIFridays there, ordered a quesadilla tower, a burger and two soft drinks, $97.00 not including tip. Dinner at that casino for the two of us I think was about $50-60 and the food was better too.
Hope this helps you some in planning your trip. If you have any questions, just tag me and I'll be happy to try to help you out.
