A cautionary tale: Amex v Marriott Visa

I just wanted to share something with y'all.  H and I have had our Amex since 2006. We started with the Gold then eventually went up to Platinum, due to all of H's travels. The larger annual fee wasn't that big of a deal, because of all the money and points we would get back.  We handle his mothers finances, so we got a card in her name, to put all of her payments and bills on. Long story short, while it cost us a little more a year (for the annual fee and to have two additional cards in mine and his mom's name)  we each got our own credit card number, but we could pool all of our points together. We will obviously keep our Amex open, but we may downgrade again to the Gold or Green so we lower the annual fee.

(Note: Amex gets paid off every month. There is an option to pay over time but the interest rate is high, and it's only for purchases more than $100.00. Let's be honest, interest rate, paying over time...Ain't nobody in MM got time for that)

Soooo...Since Costco, is making the change from Amex to Visa, we did a little research and with the traveling we like to do, it would be in our best interest to collect hotel points over, airline miles. We opted for the Marriott Rewards Visa. Bonus: They gave us a very generous limit. Second Bonus, by signing someone else up, you get a 7500 bonus in points when they use the card. Third Bonus: If you spend $3,000 in the first three months you get an additional 80,000 points. (This is super easy for us to do). Fourth Bonus: We don't have to pay any additional money in annual fee's and the fee is cheaper for the Visa. Fifth bonus, one free hotel night in a category 5.

But there's always a catch: H is a Starwood, and Marriott Elite. (However, now we're not sure if this merger is going to happen). I admit it, we jumped the gun a little bit. Strike One. HOWEVER, and this was the part that really disappointed me. We all have the same credit card numbers, unlike Amex. So if one of us loses the card or it is stolen, we have to cancel everyone's card. This especially concerns me, because while H is traveling he would have to get a new card about once a year, because it would become compromised. ie. someone, some where, duplicated it and used it. aka credit card fraud. Strike Two.  Amex has always been excellent at catching these sort of instances, I'm not so sure if Visa will be. Foul.

I called Visa and asked what if they offered different numbers. In order for me to get my own number on my card, I would have to open my own account, and have my own annual fee. The good news is I know I'm not liable for any unauthorized charges. If I do this, I wonder if I can transfer points? If I can we might be able to double our Marriott points. Stay tuned!

Re: A cautionary tale: Amex v Marriott Visa

  • Personally, I've never found earn rates on hotel specific credit cards to be that great (you may get 2 nights at a decent Marriott with 80,000 points and let's face it, their Category 5 hotels are pretty crappy). Maybe if your H gets double points or more for his frequent stays at that chain it'll be different, but in my experience for free hotel stays you'd be better off with a generic Barclay or Capital One card. We make at least $100 on month on our Barclay card, usable toward any travel expenses. Airline specific cards are a totally different story though...

  • I'll be interested to hear how this works out for you.

Citi just released the perks of the new Costco card this week.  They are really really good.  I was excited when Costco announced a switch to Visa, because we spend a lot of money there and do a fair bit of reward travel with our Chase UR cards (which are Visa).  Still, the Citi cash back rewards are high enough that I can't decide if it's worth using our Chase cards there once the Citi cards are released.  It's about a wash for us.

I'm actually glad somebody else on MM has paid for a high annual fee card in the past.  H and I have been looking at the Citi Prestige, because we are both starting to travel more for business (I have two trips this year, he has 1), and the airline credit and 4th night free at any hotel perk could easily cover the annual fee for us.  They also give you 3 free rounds of golf per year, and H loves to golf.  We live a few miles from the Robert Trent Jones golf trail, so the courses near us are very nice but very expensive.

Also, AirFrance is one of their transfer partners, which opens up bookings on Delta for us.  We usually fly out of ATL when flying internationally, and there are way more direct Delta flights than anything else.  Now the Chase cards let us fly direct on Lufthsansa (love them), but our destination choices are really limited there.

Anyway, I haven't yet owned up to seriously looking at a high-annual-fee card on these boards, but glad to hear I'm not the only one who is able to rationalize it!

Keep us posted on how the switch to the Marriott card works out.

SITB- Due to H's Platinum Elite status, we get decent points. We also visit our alma mater several weekends out of the year, and the only Marriott up there is a category 3. It's not awful. Like Bacardi and cola, it gets the job done. The good news is a new Marriott is being built up there and will be open in July. Cash back wasn't substantial enough for our situation. But I do admit, Starwood, was much better than Marriott. I'm sad to see it being sold off.

  • Sorry to hijack your post @emily1004.

What is going on with the Costco Amex to Citi situation?  I received official information about it when it was first announced like a year ago.  But I have not received any communication since.  From either Amex, Citi, or Costco.

I think that Amex card just disappears and I automatically get a Citi card?  Is that the deal?  And when does it happen?  I thought it was going to be sometime in the next month or two, which is why I've been annoyed that none of these companies are keeping me apprised of the situation.

They delayed the switch over.  It's now happening June 20.  You will get a Citi card in the mail automatically (no pull on your credit), and any rewards you have accumulated from AmEx will transfer over to Citi.  It ought to be pretty seamless.

And the Citi rewards are better than AmEx's:

  • who services the visa card? we have an LLBean card serviced through Barclays and H and I have different credit card numbers. His number was actually stolen this weekend and they called us within an hour of the fraudulet charges being made to cancel his card and express ship us a new one for free.

  • Oh it looks like Chase services the Marriott card, right?

They are very good.  My Freedom card gets stolen in the middle of the night all the time - I have no idea how, because I hardly ever use it, but there you go.  I've never had a fraudulent transaction actually go through because they are really good at blocking them.

The only thing is they are kind of slow about sending a replacement card.  However, they will FedEx them to you for free if you ask for it.  Just ask for expedited shipping.  BTDT too many times now...

Thanks!  Sweet.  I love that Costco purchases will now be at 2% back.  Plus I get 2% back annually anyway in a Costco gift certificate for the type of membership I have, so now it will be like all my Costco purchases have a 4% discount.  I found it surprising with Amex...considering my specific Amex was related to Costco...was only 1% back there, which was just like at any other store.

And hopefully Citi will be more exact with their categories.  I continually had problems with Amex restaurant purchases only getting 1% back in points when they were supposed to be 2%.  I even called Amex customer service a few times about the problem, but it was always just a waste of my time.

    Keep getting SITB

Yes, it is Chase. This is good to know. I have a Chase Freedom too, but no fraud has happened on it ....yet.

I swear to g-d if I get SITB one more time...
  • FYI, the Chase Freedom card has 5% back at grocery stores and warehouse shopping (like Sams and Costco) from April 1-June 30, up to $1500 of purchases.  I'm not sure if you can get 5% back for online purchases or not.

Regardless, there will be 10 days of crossover after Costco switches to Visa to take advantage of that one...

@short+sassy, regarding the categories, you can just look at how Visa categorizes merchants here:

I have found that they are pretty generous in their definition of "travel."  We always get bonus points for booking through places like expedia.  It doesn't have to be directly with the hotel or airline.  Also, we usually get bonus points for tolls, trains, and parking fees for some reason.  Visa categorizes them all as travel.

I have never had a restaurant code incorrectly for Visa, either here or abroad.  Actually, one of the golf courses we play at codes as a restaurant because they have a restaurant inside the clubhouse, and apparently it's all linked to the same system.  I've never called to correct them about that one....

    SITB also
The craziest example with the restaurants coded wrong is I had two purchases at the same restaurant within the span of about an hour of each other.  One was a purchase for a $100 gift card (because it was Xmas time and I'd get a $25 bonus card) and the other was about $40 for the meal we had.  I got the 2% points for the gift card...but only 1% for the meal purchase.  I could almost have understood if it was the other way around...like maybe a gift card purchase is coded differently...but that wasn't the case.  Amex couldn't explain it either, but wouldn't do anything about it.

Bolded:  Love that!  Although Costco doesn't take Chase cards, whomp whomp.  Maybe Sam's Club does and I go to Winn Dixie fairly often.
  • @short+sassy, Costco will start taking any Visa on June 20.  So you can use the Freedom card to get the category bonus once they switch over.

H has a Costco AmEx for gas, but we've never actually used it in the store.  We use our Fidelity AmEx there.

  • Eerie!  I posted yesterday wondering why I hadn't gotten anything lately about this switch.  Then, when I got home from work, there was a mail piece from Citi talking about their benefits and that I should be receiving my card before June 20th, but June 20th was the soonest it could be used.
