Street Names

Would you ever NOT buy a home due to the street address it had?

For example, four years ago when we were home searching we saw a home for sale on a street called Demontree. I could never bear to live on a street by that name. This week, I saw a home for sale on a street called Chippendale (it actually refers to a style of furniture, but most people think of buff men).

What are some odd or horrendous street names you have seen?

Re: Street Names

  • I've never thought about it before - the chippendale makes me laugh.
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • I can't think of any off the top of my head, but yes, I would NOT buy a house solely for the street name. When we were in New Mexico, there were so many ridiculous street names in our subdivision. We got kind of lucky, I guess.
  • Black Ball Hill Road. Makes me giggle every time!
  • Yes!  And I wouldn't buy a house with the house number also in the street name -  like 7 Seven Lakes Street.  There's a street/house here like that - I imagine the mail must ALWAYS get messed up and go to 77 Lakes Street!

I'd be pretty unlikey to not buy a house based on the street name, no matter how bad the name is.

Not that this is a bad name, it's just a funny name, but there is a park a few miles away from me called Bunny Friend Park.  Believe it or not, it was actually named after a person.  His last name was Friend and his nickname was Bunny.

There's a major street in NOLA called Tchoupitoulas.  That's a mouthful.  It's pronounced like CHOP-eh-two-las.

There are also a few streets here, that are actual words, but the street name is pronounced totally different.  For example, there is Burgundy St.  Oh, but no, it isn't pronounced BUR-gundy...like the wine or the color...it's pronounced bur-GUNDY, with the emphasis on the second syllable.

  • I don't a strange name would bother as long as it's not something offensive lol.

In our neighborhood we have a street named Shagbark Rd which is pretty funny...I just call it Shagbag. I've also passed a "Wisteria Lane" which reminds me of that old housewives TV show with Eva Longoria ( I forgot the name) and there are these big houses on it LoL.

  • Yes.

When I was looking for my first house, I had it narrowed down to 2 houses.  One was on Vagedes St, the other on Robinson Ave.  Vagedes was pronounced VAJ-UH-DEES... like vagina.  I picked the house on Robinson, even though I actually liked the V house a bit better (was a craftsman bungalow vs 50s ranch).

There are also some ridiculous street names here in Colorado.  I saw one the other day that was Kinnickinick Dr.   Like really?  I know it's a native american word but you'd have to spell that out for anybody over the phone and that would get really old really fast.  I mean, if my dream house was on that street I'd deal I guess, but that would be a huge pain.

Our current house is a bit annoying.  It starts with a capital i.  So many people think it's an L so they call our street name by the wrong thing.  Thankfully the post office will still deliver mail even with the mistake in the address.
  • There's a road that we pass if we drive to Las Vegas called Zzyzx road. I don't think there's any houses on it though.

Haha!  I'm familiar with that off ramp from my trips to Las Vegas.  I got curious one day and googled it.  Apparently there is a research facility at the end of it...ie middle of the dessert...that is associated with one of the UC colleges (though I forget which one).
  • I grew up in a Orange County, CA beach town called San Clemente.  Lots of the streets there START with the word Avenida...which is Avenue in Spanish.  But the abbreviation is the same (Ave.).  I would always have to explain, anytime I gave my address to someone out of state, that the Ave. abbreviation goes before the street name.  Half the time I would have to assure that "yes, it really does".

My grandpa did some top secret research stuff out off that road a long time ago.
  • In our neighboring town there is a "Devil'sLane" which I've always side eyed (seriously who named that lol) and in our town we have a "Bittersweet Lane". I think that's such a sad name for a street!

Ultimately I don't think either would dissuade me if I loved a property but it would definitely give me pause!
