Ceiling fan question

so last night my son broke the light fixture over our kitchen table. Because we have an open concept, our kitchen table is rarely centered under the light. Would it be weird to replace it with a ceiling fan?  Or should we get a fixture that is ceiling mounted?

Re: Ceiling fan question

  • As long as you don't mind cold air blowing on your food, then go for the ceiling fan.  I've seen it done that way many times.

Builders never put those lights in the right place, do they?  I had to meet with our electrician to exactly measure out where our table was going to go, that way they would hang the fixture in the right place... and it wasn't where he originally was going to put it.
  • Before you go out and get a fan, pull down the old light and find out what kind of box is up in the ceiling.  Ceiling fans a heavy and need to be mounted to a special ceiling fan electrical box that is properly tied into the ceiling.  Otherwise, you may have your fan crashing down on your table.
