NMMR - Anti Virus Protection, firewalls, etc....

I need some technological enlightenment.

My and DH's iPhones don't need additional anti-virus protection from places like McAfee or Norton, because Apple already has that software built into the iPhones, correct? And, DH's tablet for work doesn't need it either because it's a work thing and gets updates from his company.

Are the newest PCs, laptops and tablets coming out with anti-virus, firewall, etc. and other protection software already built into them, or do DH and I still need to invest in third party software companies to protect these devices from attacks and hacks?

  • I recently asked a friend who works in IT about this. He's the system administrator for a police department. His advice was not to bother for phones, but that Norton was worth purchasing for PCs. He did not recommend McAffee. He said, though, that the #1 most important thing to do was to practice safe browsing and avoid sketchy websites or programs.

My H agrees with this.  He's in IT and works for a worldwide company.  He's anti - McAffee too.  Windows 10 has Windows Defender built in.  That's what I have on my laptop.  If you install something else, it disables Defender.

  • I do IT (and every IT guy has their preferences).  I don't worry about it for our phones (one iPhone, one Android).  Apple doesn't so much have it built in as anything in the app store needs Apple approval.  As for my phone on Android, I'm just careful about what I install.

As for computers, I don't buy any of them.  I was using AVG which is free for the basic package.  Just recently moved to Avast.

  • My IT husband says don't bother paying for Norton or any other for-fee type of anti-virus protection. Free services like AVG and Avast are equally as effective. I think we have AVG on our home computer.
  • Another IT husband here too (his degree is in Information Systems Security, although that's not the field he works in).  He's a Mac guy, but we don't have anything on our computers other than the free stuff, just practice safe browsing and don't download anything weird.  We also have a super secure wireless network and make sure our passwords aren't easy.
