PSA: Scott's Cheap Flights
For our travel hackers out there...
I ran across a recommendation for Scott's Cheap Flights a few months ago on a travel forum and signed up for his free emails. He's a guy (with a couple employees) who just manually searches flights all day, every day and email blasts out deals. The deals sent for his free service were pretty good, so on a whim I upgraded to his paid service a few weeks ago. It's $39 per year. I now get 2-3 emails per day from him.
This morning I woke up to an email from him advertising a mistake fare from Atlanta to Amsterdam for under $400. I checked, and sure enough I was able to get two tickets over Thanksgiving.... all in we spent $715 for both of us. We will leave Wednesday and come back Sunday. It will be short, but we will only miss 1/2 day of work.
It was an incredible deal. For the sake of comparison, the same flight on Delta was $1800 each.
Anyway I have thoroughly gotten my money's worth, and I can confirm that the deals are real if you are willing to jump on them.
FYI deals out of certain airports are kind of rare - and Atlanta is one of those rare airports since Delta pretty much has a monopoly there. There are deals almost every day out of NYC, Boston, Chicago, and LAX. That being said, when he finds deals from other major airports he will email them out. You just have to be patient.
EDIT: To clarify, the deals he emails out are international plus Hawaii, Alaska (and I think I have seen Puerto Rico). International does include the Caribbean!

Awesome! What a great opportunity. I know you have mentioned his website before, I need to at least get signed up for his free e-mails. We're still planning a trip to Europe in the early spring, so his paid service might be worthwhile at least until then. Most of those cities are short and cheap hops from NOLA.
On that note, breaking news for the NOLA airport. As of March 2017, British Airways is going to start non-stop flights from NOLA to both London and Frankfurt. There have not been direct flights to Europe from here since 1982.
Directs are best, but we will take a connection when the price is low enough. We are taking a long layover in Toronto on the way over there. It should be enough time to leave the airport. Neither of us has ever been to Canada before!
If you are willing to be a little spontaneous and/or take a positioning flight, his paid service is a really good price for the number of deal alerts you receive. I have received 3 already today - the Amsterdam one I bought, Siem Reap in Cambodia in the 400's and Ireland over St. Patty's day in the 400-500's.
We spent one day in Amsterdam last Christmas, and we both absolutely loved it. We didn't have enough time to see everything we wanted, so we put it on our short list to revisit in case a deal came up.
I already managed to get tickets for the Anne Frank House, because we missed it last time. H also discovered that one of his favorite symphonies is being played by the Concertgebouw while we are there. He has never heard it live before. He nerded out so hard that I offered to get him tickets as his Christmas present a few weeks early. He was so excited.
Scoped it out. I didn't see direct flights to Frankfurt yet, perhaps that is happening at a later date. The flights to Frankfurt with stopovers were about $1200/per. However, I was shocked to see the fares were only $450 and the other $750 was taxes and fees.
The direct flights from NOLA to London are $958 r/t. That includes all the taxes/fees. I compared to Priceline.
WELL...isn't that fun! Priceline had one of their "secret specials" for $776/per with 0-1 stops. It was the cheapest option, other than a $758/per that made two stops. They don't tell you the airline or the times until after you book, but I could see it was a direct flight from NOLA to London. Gee, I wonder who that could be? And there is only one departure/arrival flight per day, so no mystery there either, lol.
That's an easy $182/ticket savings! I expect I might also be too far out to be seeing the best prices. Plus that route had to have just been added. I'll be keeping my eye on it.
Azores Airlines also did a test route out of Providence last summer and that is VERY high on our list if it happens again. I think it would be an easier trip to bring the kid on than Germany, and H has become fascinated with the Azores now that he works in an Azorean neighborhood.
I have never heard of Condor, but just looked it up. Apparently they do fly out of NOLA. $850 r/t to Frankfurt in May 2017. Thanks for the tip!
My family on my mom's side immigrated from the Azores to Hawaii in the late 1800s. The sugar cane plantations at the time did heavy campaigning in Portugal to find employees. I always knew I was Portuguese, but only found out recently we are specifically from the Azores.
It is a bit funny. The two areas of the U.S. that the Portuguese immigrated to were Hawaii and the northern end of the East Coast. About as far away as two areas can be. The famous chef Emeril Lagasse is of Portuguese ancestry. My grandma likes him, but always adds the qualifier, "Though he's East Coast Portuguese." Not that she means it as a bad thing, just being specific that he was not raised in Hawaii.
I'm German on my dad's side and would love to see that country. My H prefers Rome, and I want to go there also. I'd love to do a combo Germany/Italy trip.
I think my favorite food there was the Indonesian food. Yummmm. And the amazing European beer. We found one of the rarest beers in the world (Westvleteren) easily in a liquor store on our first day there. And the cheese....I could go on! We brought back Gouda that was aged in a WWII bunker.
I totally found Stroopwafels at Target the other day. They're not exactly the same but still delicious.
