difference between stage 1 and 2 baby food?

I can see that stage 3 baby foods are nice and chunky, but the only difference I can tell between 1 and 2 is the size of the jars. Some friends gave us a bunch of stage 2 veggies, and I don't know if I can give them to her yet or not..

We start solids this week!

Oh, p.s. Gerber rice cereal with DHA is REALLY gross! Their DHA supplement is fish oil based -- I should have read the ingredients list first-- and it tastes sour and fishy. I suppose it could be salvaged mixed into baby meat, but it's horrible on its own.

Re: difference between stage 1 and 2 baby food?

  • stage 2 is thicker than stage 1.  Stage 1 is more watery.

Good luck with starting solids.  My doctor told us to do the rice cereal for about 2 weeks before starting stage 1.

  • ditto Marina.

I still give Allison cereal in the morning on occasion, usually only if her morning bottle doesn't satisfy her. I found that she likes HappyBellies organic brown rice cereal over the gerber. You can find it at Whole Foods.

Good luck with starting solids! It's a whole new adventure!

  • Stage 2 is slightly thicker. Also, stage 2 foods often start mixing 2 or more foods together. You don't want to give mixed foods until after the food has been introduced on it's own as you need to watch for allergies. Cereal should be fed for a couple of weeks before starting jarred foods. then give one food for several days before moving on to the next food to give time for allergy symptoms to appear.
