where to stay in Big Bear Mountain?

We'd like to plan a long weekend get away, but we've never been and have no idea where to start the planning. ?Are there resorts/lodges or just cabins to rent? ?Is there a particular place you'd recommend or advise against based on your experiences?

?

thanks!?

Re: where to stay in Big Bear Mountain?

  • My DH and I were just there right before Thanksgiving (me for the first time).

We stayed at a B&B called the Alpenhorn.  It was a very beautiful little place and they have large jacuzzis (sp?) in the bathrooms.  However, we both agreed that next time we would probably prefer renting a cabin just so we would have more privacy (you know, not having to eat breakfast with everyone, make small talk, etc.)  But I think that is a great place to start for your first time up there.

Unfortunately, I don't have any recs for cabins, but I think it is peak season right now, so things might be either booked or a little pricey, so I would check it out right away.

I have to say, DH and I are foodies, and the food on the mountain was very good.  (Except for the IHOP!  blech!)  There is a little fancier restaurant called the Peppercorn Grille that was very good - DH loved their steak.  Then there was a little hole in the wall BBQ place that was very good, but I can't think of the name right now.

    Have fun!

  • I was going to say the Alpenhorn as well -we haven't stayed there but I've heard from several people that it's really nice.

A few years ago DH and I stayed at My Secret Garden (Our Secret Garden? The Secret Garden? something about a secret garden, anyway) It was a lovely little complex of one-bedroom cabins, each with a flower theme. The rooms had fireplaces and jacuzzi tubs, and they were very private. It was sort of far from the main drag, though, but I recall we still walked to a few places (though we went in the summer, I wouldn't walk through the snow!)

  • You can try www.bigbearvacations.com. We have had good luck with rentals through them.
  • I've never ventured up to Big Bear but just wanted to say hi to you.  How are things for you?  Have you adjusted to your move out here?  Are you still in Studio City?  I hope you and your family are doing well.  Happy New Year!
