Has anyone made sushi / maki rolls?

DH and I are thinking of attempting to make veggie maki rolls tonight.  Has anyone made them before?  I found some info online and I think I have the general idea down.  Are they difficult to make?  I suppose if we start early and if its a flop, we can always order take out.

Re: Has anyone made sushi / maki rolls?

  • dcmetrobride's DH makes sushi.  I would page her to see if she can help.

  • When we have made them before the key has been the rice.....if you dont get the rice right then you are screwed..... Did you pick up the short grain Japanese rice?

not yet, i'm planning on getting everything after work. I'll be sure to get short grain Japanese rice. Thanks for the tip!  I also read that rice vinegar has to be added, which i didn't know.

  • Yes, rice vinegar needs to be added to the rice also.

What kind of maki are making--- cucumber, avocado, shrimp, krab (the fake stuff like in a California roll) or actual raw stuff?

We didnt do anything raw to begin with because it was a little too daunting for us when we tried. Ultimately we couldnt roll as fast as we wanted to eat and gave up :-)

Well, since we're newbies at this, we're starting with all veggie & cooked fish.  Even if it goes well, we'll prolly leave the raw sushi to the pros at the two sushi places we frequently go to.

  • Good plan on leaving the raw to the experts!

Oh another tip--- that rice can get REALLY sticky. Keep a bowl of water handy to dip your hands in before you work with it....it will keep you from getting stuck to it and make for less messy rolls.

Thanks for the tip!  I handn't thought of that :)
