Nice affordable areas in NH

My DH and I relocated from the Keene area to the Seacoast. The housing cost are so much more expensive out here. We love this area but I miss owning a house, we had a small 4 bedroom house and now we're renting an expensive apt. What are some more affordable towns that are nice family communities close by? My DH works in Portsmouth so we would need to be within an half an hour from downtown Portsmouth.

Re: Nice affordable areas in NH

  • I'm not really sure what affordable is but Durham, Madbury, Newfields, and Newmarket all have some nice family neighborhoods where you can get a home more reasonably than in Portsmouth. I am not sure what Lee is like, but it is also less expensive.

  • You should page Hillary - she is a real estate agent (our Nestie insider!) and would be a great asset to you in your house search.  She knows that area well and has helped several Nesties and our friends fine great homes in the Seacoast.
  • Most affordable that DO have nice neighborhoods - but every town will have their pro's and con's....Newmarket, Dover, Rochester, Somersworth...

I personally live in Rochester which is about 35-40 mins depending on traffic on Rt 16.  It has nice neighborhoods, and is affordable, but there are the low income areas as well.  It's a toss up on what is most important to you.  Dover, Somersworth, and Newmarket are the same way.  All of them have nice areas if you look for them.  But - pretty much every town is like that, including Portsmouth.

I'd say check with a realtor and they'll help guide you on what is important to you.
