Has anyone ever used Lupron?
My sister just went through the same surgery I had two years ago because she had a horrible case of endometriosis. Her doctor said that after her 6 week check up her cramps should be very minimal and if not, she would need to go on Lupron. Apparently her period started and her cycle is just as bad as before (I feel bad for her, she can barely get out of bed for a few days due to such bad cramps).
She's hesitant to start Lupron because her doctor said it would be like putting your body through 6 months on menopause...and she's only 22. Can anyone tell me their experiences with this drug so I can pass along the info to her? Thanks.
Re: Has anyone ever used Lupron?
I work at a urology office and we use Lupron to treat patients with prostate cancer. I guess it inhibits the hormones secreted by the prostate. I didn't know it was also used to treat endometriosis but it sounds plausible.
We usually advise the men that they will go through a type of menopause. They can suffer from hot flashes and mood swings as a result of the Lupron.
Endometriosis is serious and if she is worried about Lupron treatments, I would have her get a second opinion from another Ob/Gyn who specializes in treating endometriosis.
Hi Steph,
I was diagnosed a couple years ago with endo stage 4. I had a laparoscopy in June 2007 and was on Lupron for 6 months after the surgery to help prevent the endo from coming back so soon.
My experience wasn't too bad. Basically, I stopped getting periods and my body went into a menopausal state. I took add-back therapy which are low dose estrogen pills that help with the hot flashes and menopausal symptoms. I strongly suggest she ask her doctor to prescribe that to her. It really helps ease the symptoms.
I did become moody. I didn't notice it as much as my family and friends did. Even my co-workers who didn't know I was on Lupron til afterwards said they could tell something was different.
I stopped getting the shots in January 2008 and it took 4 months for my period to return. It can sometimes take awhile for the Lupron to get completely out of your symptom. I actually had to take meds to get my period to start again.
I will say that during the Lupron treatment, my endo symptoms went away ( probably because I wasn't having a period). But even afterwards when we were trying to conceive, my periods were much lighter and I didn't get many cramps. Before the Lupron and surgery I experienced very heavy cramping.
As you can see, I did get pregnant afterwards (don't know if she is thinking about it any time soon). But it really helped me.
Let me know if you have any more questions. Good luck to your sis!
