Okay - for any of the Catholic Nesties in the upstate... DH and I live in Simpsonville, so the closest church to us is St. Mary Magdalene on Woodruff Rd. I've tried going there 3 or 4 times and wow. It's painful to sit through the 9am mass with the older priest because he is so slow and takes what seems like an eternity to bless the eucharist. And the Christmas Eve mass with Fr. Theo at 8:30? We had to leave because it was pushing an hour and 45 minutes and we had JUST received communion.
I've looked online for other churches and I see there's St. Anthony's downtown as well as St. Mary's downtown. And Our Lady of the Rosary over on Augusta Rd.
Are there any suggestions for a different church? Or even a different mass time at St. Mary Magdalene? I'd like to keep going there because it's closest to the house - but there's not established mass schedule for the priests - so if you find one you like it's like playing the lottery to try to find his mass again the next week. Seems odd to me...
I hope someone can help me! Thanks!
Re: Catholic Churches in the Upstate??
I think some friends of ours attended St. Elizabeth's and encouraged us not to go because it was so extremely traditional... I'm not sure if I'm getting this confused with another church they may have attended.
Am I wrong? I assume it's a "normal" Catholic Church. :-) Thanks!
Yup seems "normal" to me.
Funny you should ask this because I feel like my husband and I are still looking for a good Catholic church in the Upstate. I grew up in Virginia and went to the same church all my life. Husband is Lutheran, but he agreed we'd go to mass each Sunday. Compared to churches we've been to here, my church in VA was not as traditional as I thought.
We went to Prince of Peace first and it is extremely traditional. A million altar boys (no girls) and incense the entire time, which I haven't had at church in years. The parishoners also kneel at the altar and receive communion on their tongues. Once I saw that, I skipped communion and we left.
We tried St. Anthony's in downtown and it was too contemporary for us. We didn't go back there either.
We heard from some people we met at our Engaged Encounter weekend that St. Mary Magdalene is the most "normal" church around.
Right now we go to the 11am mass at St. Mary Mag's and while I have a hard time understanding the priest who seems to be on a steady schedule, it's the best we've found.
Hope you have more luck finding a place you like.
