The joys of car buying....Recs Needed!

So we are researching, and hoping to purchase by Presidents Day. We are looking to trade in Scott's car. I drive a jeep and really thought we wanted another one. But while thinking about it, we really don't need a second suv and that is excessive. The last car we bought was my jeep, and we were obviously in the market for an SUV. Now that we want a car, neither of us have any idea what we want. We know we want a 4-door sedan, but then what?? There are 2349823094 options!

Any recs? What do you drive? Do you like it? TIA!

Re: The joys of car buying....Recs Needed!

  • i drive an suv (saturn vue) DH drives an audi.  i love it! ive been driving that this winter because it is better in the snow than the suv! his is a 2003 and you can get a really good deal if you buy used.  my sister also has a audi (used) and she can afford it on her teacher salary. its been a good car to us. im thinking of getting one as well when my lease is up on the saturn.  for what its worth, i really like my saturn too.  its a midsize suv and it hasnt given me any problems.
  • I just got into an accident and found out that my car is totaled...so I purchsed a Jeep Grand Cherokee and am very excited, but since you want a sedan...I used to drive a Dodge Stratus and it is very small.  It was fine for me to drive, but Jim hated it and felt squished whenever we were in it.  For my rental, I have an Impala and I think that it is nice.  It is bigger than my Stratus, but not gigantic, so I would def. recomend that, but I have no clue how much they go for.
  • My dad has a Hyundai Azera and LOOOOVES it.  They don't make it anymore - but I would highly recommend buying used anyway.  The Azera is their luxury package - it has everything - heated seats, GPS, moon roof, that back-up cam.  Plenty of room.

    Look into it!

    Here's one from vehix.com
  • We just bought a 2009 Corolla from Rockingham Toyota and I couldnt be more thrilled with it. So far its been good in the snow, as good as a car can be... You cant beat the gas mileage, with the prices hovering around$1.55/ gallon I can filled it up around $20!

We have a 2003 Ford F250, so that is our towing car. The Corolla is great to put miles on.

  • Cayla, I know we already chatted, but the other thing I wanted to mention is that buying a foreign vehicle (Toyota, Honda) will GREATLY help your resale/trade in value when it comes time.  If you buy American, you will depreciate faster than you can spit.  Also...SUV's are another one that is not retaining their resale value because everyone is downsizing.  It's kind of like the housing market...no one's house is worth the same anymore.

Keep that in mind too... and did you email him yet?

  • I just emailed him this morning.... he is going to think I am such a nut. I started the email at home and finished it at work, and I ramble through most of it. LOL- I really sound crazy but it just comes down to being scared to death about spending that amount of money when I was screwed the first time around. And really it's so stupid because we aren't looking to spend a whole ton of money, in fact, cheap money is more our budget right now :-)
  • Right now, we have a new GMC Acadia (our SUV) & a 2003 BMW station wagon with about 90k miles.  I know you are interested in a 4-door sedan, but we LOVE the sport wagon.  It's like a sedan (small, manuverable, easy to drive), but with a little extra room.

When we have to eventually replace the BMW, we plan on getting another sport wagon.   We have a dog, so we like that we can still seat 4 people & put the dog in the way back.  I saw that other people have mentioned Audis--we are considering an Audi wagon because I don't think the BMW is very good in the snow.  However, I've heard they've improved it since 2003.

Also, my sil has had 3 Infinitis & loves them.

Are there any Auto Shows in the area in the near future?  When we knew we would be buying a new car within the year, we went to the Auto Show in NYC.  It was a great way to sit in any & every car made.  There was no sales pressure, all our questions could be answered, & we found out about cars that we didn't even know existed.

  • I've always bought Toyotas - I used to have a Corolla, now have a Matrix and Tom has a Corolla - love 'em!
  • I love my Toyota Corolla! Also like the Camry but I went with the cheaper one when I bought it a few years ago.
    Abbie 6/6/10 and DD#2 due 2/20/13
  • If you are looking for something that will specifically be good in NE weather, my hubby drives a Subaru Legacy and it has been good to us!  It is a little small (for a car seat) but decently sized for other uses.  The resale value isn't bad either.

We are Ford people all the way, since DH's dad used to work for them and we get a nice discount.

That being said, all I can think of when I see Dodge Stratus is that SNL skit with Will Ferrell- "I drive...I drive...I drive a Dodge Stratus!!!" ?Anyone else??

  • Im' also a toyota lover... DH just bought a new Subaru Forester but that's because he wanted the suped up sport daddy car.... needless to say... we looked at the Toyota Matrix and found it to be really nice... plus there is a version that has 4 wheel drive so it would be super in the snow!
  • I also have an '09 Corolla- it's a great car! $20 fills my tank with the current prices and I only fill it once a week or week and a half. I drive 20 min. to and from work and we use it more than DHs truck on the weekends so it gets a lot of use.
  • Hondas and Toyotas are rated excellent in Consumer Reports.  I have a tiny little Honda Fit (which fits more than it seems), and I am now addicted to Hondas.
