SM had weird fixation with food?

did anyone else ever think this or was it just me?  i mean who cares? i felt like she was always taking the time to tell us that Bella ate her breakfast or whatever...like to subconsciously communicate to her favorite audience of young teen girls that they should continue to eat when they fall in love, ...or whatever.

Re: SM had weird fixation with food?

  • I've never thought about that, but did anyone else notice that the only food Bella ever ate in the movie was salad and vegetables.  Is Bella a vegan and I never caught on?  Or is KS a vegan?  Not that it matters but there was just a bunch of celery eating going on in the movie.

I think SM has very traditional values in that she thinks the woman should cater to the man, always feeding Charlie, etc.  So maybe your theory is correct, hey girls, you got a man now, keep up the eating and cooking!

  • Meh, I just took it all in as descriptive details.

I actually laughed at Bella's three-bite granola bar/chug of juice breakfasts - it reminds me of my HS breakfasts.

  • I noticed that too about the movie - I thought it was so weird, her veggie burgers and stuff, because it was not like that in the book. Why take the time to create details like that, yet leave out so much character development?

  • Book Bella was definitely not a vegan: she ate steak. Movie Bella I did notice that. Who knows, maybe it's KS or maybe they were trying to make Bella stand out as more of a freak in this meat eating place.

I did kind of notice a lot of detail to what Bella ate or coooked. Bella ate cereal, Bella ate a poptart, Bella are ravioli, etc. SM is nuts.

  • [i KNOW!!??!  it just contributes to how weird weird WEIRD i think SM is!  and bella being a vegan in the movie was stupid - it isnt like they even really fleshed out the "Edward eats animals" storyline - he said it like once.  (and i am assuming the whole vegan thing was to highlight another difference b/tw the two)  like how she faints at the sight/smell of blood in the book.
  • The movie stuff was annoying just bc it was so different from the book. The food in the book, though - IDK. The HP books describe the different foods quite often. I guess maybe I have an obsession with food bc I like those details? Hahaha!

HP books are different about it though.  When JKR decribes food she's trying to give you a warm fuzzy feeling,  she often talks about desserts or holiday spreads.  SM talks about pop tarts and cereal

I was thinking that she's vegan-ish in the movie was to have her stick out a bit more, but then the only other one who they show what they're eating of is Charlie... I wished in the movie Bella would have actually cooked for Charlie like in the books... they missed so much in the movie!

  • not quite food related....but, I liked that SM included daily living details in the books. I liked the details on laundry, chores, cooking, etc. I get annoyed when I read books that treat their characters like superhumans with super secret robots that take care of everything for them.

But I also think it helped to emphasize Bella's maturity in comparison to a lot of teenagers (and her own mother) and the fact that she was pretty independent and that her parents' lack of supervision was logical... also that she was compatible with Edward who had several years' maturity on her.

  • I think the movie meals might have something to do with KS. I remember reading the script and it said that Bella was eating a seafood platter. In the movie, she has a spinich salad. Picky picky KS.

I actually like those kinds of details in the book. I think it takes the extra step to differentiate(sp) between her being human and Edward being a vamp. He tends to forget that she needs to eat. SM reminds us that she has to do it all the time. At least that's what I think the reason is.

  • I always thought she was obsessed with sleeping... she talked about it a LOT... and had Bella sleeping away more than half her life in those damn books!
