Hi,
So we got our first medical bill back from our insurance company from my hospitalization. The only covered HALF of it!!
I was on the phone all morning with the insurance company. They said I'm being penalized for not calling them within 48 hours. I was admitted on saturday through the ER. Cedars called them on tuesday, which is 48 business hours. But the insurance company says, i needed to call them on the weekend. Since I did NOT do this, I am responsible for the other half of the bill. WTF!!! I have PPO Blue Cross blue shield. The rep was so mean to me. I said, look i was in the ER and admitted, i was in no shape to make a phone call. The rep said, then a family member should have made the call.
The total is close to 10k. We can not afford this. I talked to my company, since its their insurance and they do not want to get involved. I have an appt at cedars today in 30 min so i'm going to talk to them to see if they can help.
What do i do???
Its obviously a stupid insurance loop hole so that THEY get out of paying the bill. I'm supposed to have a 1,500 dollar MAX out of pocket deductible. Whats the point of that if they can charge you "penalities."
Last year with all my ER trips and hospitalizations with my gallbladder we never ran into this problem. Maybe its because they hospitalized me on the weekend?
I'm so upset.
Any suggestions????
Re: Ladies I need some help/advice
yikes. i'm sorry you're dealing with this. how awful.
the first thing i'd have done was to ask for a manager. next up, i'd contact my insurance rep and raise bloody hell. i'd just keep going from there.
WHAT??
I deal with health insurance on a daily basis and have never heard of this. I mean, I know they want to be informed as soon as possible that you have been or are in the hospital...but they should know that you were not physically able to call them....
And next, the fact that your company says "they don't want to get involved"???? They should lose their job for saying that. Again, I spend a ton of time on the phone between the insurance company, our insurance brokers and sometimes even the actual doctor's office solving just these types of problems. So, that is just straight out laziness or something on the part of your company.
I'm very sorry you're having to deal with this. There is nothing worse than having medical issues and then having to deal with the billing issues afterwards.
