CMV

What are your takes on choosing a donor that is positive or negative for CMV? I have been tryin to read up on the subject but it is somewhat confusing - I can't figure out if it can be harmful to the baby out of utero or the fetus in utero, or anytime in the child's life for that matter.

 Thanks in advance.

  • I think the simplist thing is to just go with a CMV negative donor.

We had our eye on a CMV positive donor, so I got tested. It was a simple blood test and my greedy insurance covered it. I'm negative, so our positive donor option was out.

    Good question!

  • You will have some blood work done first when you find out your neg.. then you must have a neg.. donor. If your positive then you can have a neg. or pos. donor.
  • I didn't realize the way it worked... thanks so much for the links and experience :)

I didn't even know what it was until this morning when I was sifting through websites. Huh?

  • we had a pretty big list of donors (or at least we thought so), so we decided to just take the cmv positive donors out of contention right off the bat. we thought it would be an easy way to narrow down our list quickly, and we wouldn't have had to deal with deciding on a new one had we picked a positive donor and c tested negative. also, we plan on using the same donor (or at least trying to). since the plan is for me to carry the second child i would have needed to be tested before we started as well to make sure we could do that--although i'm guessing it's entirely possible, or even likely, that if one of us is positive the other is.
