wow...insurance costs:(

If I am retained by my new employer, the one who bought our old dying company, I can look forward to the new insurance we were just introduced today:

The one where I pay close to $450 a month for basic coverage for me and the two kiddies. And I have $1,600 family deductible, am responsible for 25% of most costs, and a annual out of pocket max of $9k. On top of this, the insurance doesn't include pharmacy??? That's an additional cost of $102.00 a month, not including co-pay or deductible.

*crossing fingers that I can get added to H's insurance, which is costly but not at as bad as this!!!*

People are crying over here. If people do get laid off, which is more than likely, many won't be able to afford Cobra.

Re: wow...insurance costs:(

  • btw- total cost for my insurance with dental, vision, pharmacy and medical: over $650 a month (that's just for me & the two kids)

    The company basically gives nothing.

  • OUCH! That's horrible, no wonder so many people don't have insurance. It sounds like it would be better to look into a private policy than even bother with going through your company.
  • Wow!  That's really pathetic...especially in banking/financial services...they are usually very good when it comes to benefits.

You should absolutely be able to get on H's plan...this is considered a qualifying event for you...and a qualifying event allows you to hop onto his plan.

  • Wow, our company pays 100% and the cost for me and the boys is $740, for way better insurance. It sounds like your company is making money off you!

Crossing fingers you get on your H's plan.

  • Mindy- it's waaay pathetic! We were basically offered a form of Kaiser, where you are responsible for 35% of costs or this Standard Managed care. (unsure who the provider is at this point)

waiting to hear back from H's HR rep. I'm pretty certain this will qualify.

  • my employer pays $850 for insurance.. anything over that is out of pocket.  Let's put it this way... I have a family plan now... and I pay close to 400 out of pocket for medical, dental, and vision combined.

  • If H's rep says it doesn't qualify, I'd be interested in knowing why.
  • **fell off chair** what the heck do they pay for then?

  • That's awful! I'm so sorry! I know how important medical insurance is.  Will you qualify to get Healthy Families for your kids?  I know a few people who have lost their jobs and they have applied HF.
  • Hey Pea,

The bank that I worked for was acquired by the same one yours was in March of 08 and we were all floored by the horrible insurance they have as well!  We had single moms who could no way afford the outrageous monthly coverage either and so they had to get the "Healthy Families" healthcare from the State of California.  Luckily my husband has great insurance so it didn't affect me but there are a couple of people that I still work with who don't dare go to the doctor even if they are dying because they are afraid of what their out of pocket expenses will be!

  • That's just horrible.
