New to Los Angeles

Hi-?

I'm new to the LA area we are living in Palms/Culver City. I'm now a stay at home mom and a little bored since I don't know the area. Coming from Manhattan it's strange not to be able to really walk around and check things out. So any tips on local parks, indoor gyms for my 15 month old. And I'm in dire need of some hair coloring- can anyone recommend a salon that won't cost me a fortune.?

Also- anyone in my area who would like to get together??

Thanks-

Colleen?

Re: New to Los Angeles

  • I don't have any recs for your area, but I just wanted to say, "Welcome!"
  • Welcome Colleen!

Downtown Culver City is really cute and has a lot of fun little shops/bakeries/restaurants. Have you explored there yet?

I live in El Segundo (about 5 miles south of Culver City) and our Main St. also is really cute to walk around and there are a couple of cute parks.

As for hair, I go to a spa called Murad in El Segundo - they charge me around $120 I think for a cut and color - but I had super long hair.

  • Hi, and welcome!

I live in hawthorne, next door to El Seg where wishIwereahhousewife lives.. hawthorne ISN'T cute, but El Seg is! There is a great park there where I take my little one. I'm a SAHM (work from home) , and there are a lot of great moms here on this board, so if you'd ever like to meet for coffee or something, just page. Smile

  • oh, aren't you close to the Howard Hughes center? There is a Gymboree play gym location in that center.
  • I live 15 minutes away from you - nest.insomniac@gmail.com

I don't have kids though, so I know very little about that.

Main Street in Culver City is a great little area to browse around.  On Tuesday afternoons they have a decent Farmer's Market that I'd recommend.   The Westside Pavillion is the nearest mall (Pico and Westwood) and there's probably some parks and stuff around.

I'd get real familiar with Yelp and various internet sites - there's got to be a list of activities/places for moms.

  • Hi and Welcome!  Hope to "see" you around on the LA Boards.
  • hi! I'm moving to LA in 4 weeks from Philly!

  • Welcome to Culver City. Depends on your exact area but here are a few parks I think are nice: Culver City Park at Duquesne & Jefferson, Veterans Park at Culver & Overland, Irving Schachter Park at Beverlywood & Beverwil and Cheviot Hills Park on Motor between Monte Mar and Pico. The Culver City website is a great source of information about the area, including all parks.

I don' t have kids so I don't know about indoor gyms. What I DO know is DON'T, DO NOT, go to Sol Salon on Washington in Culver City. Learn from my, and others', mistakes and just skip it no matter what Yelp says :) I can't recommend any cheap hair places but Katie at Awilda on Robertson does amazing color. She charges about $110 for half-head highlights and $85.

You're going to have quite a bit of culture shock moving from Manhattan to your new place - I had horrible culture shock moving here from a more metropolitan part of LA that's only 4 miles away. It's just very suburban here. Not bad, just suburban. But Culver City has great schools and what seems to be a very prideful community.

     Good Luck
