Need cute ideas for Hawaiian themed bedroom for pre-teen

Yeah, I know...she's going to be 8 next month.  YIKES!  I want to re-do her bedroom for her birthday.  She mainly has Littlest Pet Shop and Hannah Montana things all over the place and I want it to be a little bit more grown up.

Anyways, we ordered this set for her bedroom from Pottery Barn teen:

I picked up a pink sheet set this evening.  Other than that...what can I do to make the room themed?  Where can I find stuff to decorate with that is affordable?

  • What about painting a large one of these on the wall? Maybe just a slight shade darker or lighter than the current color?

  • I know I saw a grass skirt bedskirt at Target one time - I think they had one that went in the doorway, too.

There are Ebay shops that sell very affordable decorative surf boards. (the real thing costs $$$$)

We did my son's room in a Hawaiian theme and found that there were many websites out there that sold merchandise in this theme. Ron Jon's is also an obvious possibility.

  • I gave my daughter a hawaiian themed bday party last summer.  She decided she wanted to do her room in that too.  So she ended up keeping some of the decor from the party and using it for her room.  I got things from party city and oriental trading.  She has a pink and a blue paper lanterns hanging in the corner.  There was a small grass skirt that we hung on a table, she pined it on the wall and it looks pretty cool.  I was afraid that party decor turned into room decor would look cheap and tacky, but it really doesn't!  I suppose you just have to pick the right things.  A few months after her party we ended up moving, and the house we found, one of the rooms had bright orange paint!  At first I thought, wow, don't know about that!  But then I realized it was perfect for her theme, and it looks really great with all the decor in there!  GL with your daughters room!!
  • Paint is the best way to transform the room and its affordable!
  • Love that comforter set. PB has such cute things for kids and teens!

I'm always a big fan of those vintage travel posters, and there are a lot of great Hawaii ones. I found these on art.com: http://tinyurl.com/7roehn  But I am sure there are other places that have posters like this too.

I'll also second whoever mentioned Target. I haven't checked lately but a couple of years ago, they had a really great line of accessories for teen's bedrooms. (I actually bought a really cute French message board that's hanging in my office now). I think they had one that was Hawaiian themed.

What a great b-day present. Your daughter is going to be so excited! :)

Wow, awesome find on the posters...thanks!

I'll check out Target tomorrow.  I vaguely remember a surfer/Hawaiian themed room decor area there...
