PCP help

Okay, I've finished reading all the books and I'm starting to chart today (CD3)!  In the next few months we will pay down everything on the PCP list-of-things-to-pay-down, and then we'll be ready to go.

SO.  The next thing on our list is to ask our PKD.  If/when he agrees, we'll (obv) talk everything to death so he has an idea of what he's getting himself into, then send him for STI tests at PP.  I'm guessing that's going to cost about $200?  Anyone know?  The info doesn't seem to be available online.  I'm switching gynos to a bigger practice that does OB, so I'll make a PCP apt. in the next couple of months.  What am I missing or forgetting to do?

Also- everything seems to advise that we pay our donor for his "work", but I feel very silly doing that.  I'm sure this is premature, but I've been thinking about it.  Would it be totally inappropriate to give him a gift instead?  I'm thinking a gift basket with his favorite treats.  Lame? Be honest!

    - I just messaged a friend that works at pp...I'll get the price range for ya.

  • how about a donor contract? and i would recommend paying him - only because it makes it very clear that this is simply a payment-for-service relationship.  I know it sounds cold and unnecessary if its a close friend, but you NEVER know what the future will hold and the most important thing is to protect your family.
  • I've been on PNVs for a couple weeks now.  We will def. do the donor contract (I catagorize that under "talk things to death").  I suppose payment should be in the contract, huh.  How much do we pay?!
  • IDK...I would guess payment should be monthly.  If we buy the stuff from the banks at $250+ then maybe your KD could be $100 a month.  IDK though...that's just a number I pulled from thin air.

  • hmmm....well thats a really personal decision that you'll have to discuss w/ your PKD.  I think it would depend on how many insems you'll plan to do per month. To give you a frame of reference, frozen bank sperm is around $200-$450/vial - of course, they are expenseive b/c of overhead and because they can be....
  • if you're going to an re or through a bank they usually have a quarantine time. he'd have to donate, get tested, then get tested again after a certain time (6 months at our bank) before you could use it. if you're doing everything at home that's not really a concern, but if not it's something to check into.
  • ooo! I can help with this.

We did PP for all of our donors. They have a "Peace of Mind" package which will test for Everything. I don't know if the cost varies, but at our clinic it's $175 without insurance. We decided not to try to go through our donor's insurance and just pay for it. Word of warning though, you can not make the appointment for him, nor can you get the results on his behalf. To make sure the testing was done per our contract (not that we didn't trust them, just for the paper trail) we made the check out to PP and asked for paper copies of the results from our donor.

We paid our donors $50 per insem. Some months we did only 2, some months 4. It all depends on your timing. I also felt really uncomfortable paying for sperm and in many states, it's illegal to purchase sperm without going through a cryobank. I suppose it's the qu33r ttc version of prostitution in their eyes. Focked up, but to get around any legal issues, we put in our contract that we were paying for our donor's TIME, not sperm.

This last month when we had our donor staying with us during insems, we didn't pay him. This was an obvious breech of our contract, but he declined and we took him out a few times and bought him gifts. Nothing says "Thanks for the spooge" like a Mad Men boxed set.

I'm so excited for you two! Good luck and feel free to ask lots of questions from those of us familiar with the KD world. xoxo

  • I also wanted to clarify where we got the $50 from. Though it costs at least a couple hundred for a vial of sperm from a cryo, a donor only gets paid $50 on average for a single donation. I figured we were cutting out the middle man, and the cost was still fair for the "job."
  • Thank you dears!  I'd never get pregnant without your help.  Shoot- I couldn't have gotten married without your help!! I much rather like the idea of paying for time than sperm...  it makes me feel better, so that's how I'll think about it.  Can't remember who mentioned it- but we're going to try to do everything at home- at least to start.  We'll see where we end up!
