It's a long shot since I see this board is rather dead, but...
I'm looking for advice on anything and everything: nice areas to live, what's the school system like (no kids yet, but one day), cost of living, things to do, quality of life, how's the economy there, etc. My DH and I live in Charleston now and I'm anticipating that the Norfolk area is very similar, but hopefully with better schools. Finding jobs shouldn't be a problem since DH's job is promoting/transferring him there and my job should be able to transfer as well.
We'll be flying up there for a weekend sometime in the next month to check it out. I've never been - what should we check out that will give us a good feel for the area?
Re: Good chance we're moving to Norfolk...
This board is rather dead but it's also pretty new so hopefully in time, it will pick up.
My DH went to college in Norfolk for 3 years (grad from ODU), so I can't really help much with the schools for kids in the area but have a general idea of living there. Definitely spend a lot of time driving around in the area (as for any move!). Some areas are really beautiful and safe and others are not and the change can be the difference in just a street or two. Colley Ave is a wonderful little stretch of out door eateries and a great walking street but go under the bridge by Walgreens and you're in a not so great part of town!
That said, I loved Norfolk. I secretly wished he had taken a job there but he's a country kind of guy so we are in a different part of the state. It has a lot of potential and it has changed so much since he was there just three years ago. ODU is really expanding (football team next year) and that is helping that area of Norfolk out so much. I think it has only gotten better. The waterfront is beautiful too and we loved going to Ocean View beaches and the air shows at the base. It's also within 20 or so minutes of Virginia Beach. There is a lot to do but it's not such a huge city or area that you feel lost.
Good luck and enjoy Norfolk!
Hey! Although i lived in NC for most of my life, i had family in Norfolk and visited often. May of 2007, I offically moved here, settled down and got married. We live near Oceanview, which is a nice beachy area, You can literally see the beach from your apartment/house! Me and my hubby like to be very cultured, so we love going to the various muesums, Shows at the Norfolk Scope and the Norva(they have concerts and events). Waterside is So beautiful and awesome, I love going downtown also, there are lots of resturants and events going on, they also have festivals and those are so much FUN! Norfolk is also 45 mins away from VA Beach, where they have the strip and the beach, clubbing and bars, mini golf and amusement rides! I could go on and on about all the fun things there are to do here. Yes its that much stuff! lol
Now, the economy here , to me, isn't as great as it should be, there are jobs around here you just really have to hunt them down. I relay alot on craigslist for that! I just graduated from ECPI which is a tech. school in va beach. There are so many schools around here for just about every program you can think of! The only downside is some of those can be expensive, but the same goes for if you are looking for a job, you have to hunt! We are a military family, so we get a discount on apartments, but even if you are a civilian, you can find some really good deals. My friend lives in ocean view and she has a 2 bed room apartment for 650 a month, and she has washer and dryers included, and its HUGE! I don't know about the school system for kids, i don't have any yet also...but i shall ask some of my military moms and see what they have to say and let you know. The only drawback about Norfolk, or VA in general, is they have their own tax tacked on to everything, like i bought a hat from the store for 4.99 and addition to the sales tax was VA tax, they stop selling acohol at 12 am every day lol(ionno it matters to my hubby), and the traffic can be horrendous at times!
Well, in conclusion, I think Norfolk is an awesome place to live, it has a little bit of everything, very diverse and plently of stuff to do. Just hunt around a little and you can save some good money and land a great job. If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to ask!!
