How do you handle doing stuff you don't want to do?

Do you get the dreaded thing over with first?  Or do you put it off and put it off until you just have to do it?

I'm a bad bad bad procrastinator.  One of my goals for 2009 is to work on that.  I don't know why I just don't do the dreaded thing first and get it over with.  Because when you get it out of the way then you can breathe easier and move on to more pleasant things.

So what do ya'll do?

Re: How do you handle doing stuff you don't want to do?

  • I am a champion procrastinator, definitely.

  • I'm with Lauren, I'm a huge procrastinator myself. I try to get the dreaded deal out of the way first.  That way I can look forward to doing other things, instead of dreading everything I'm doing only b/c I know the dreaded deal is still lingering around.
  • like what?

I don't want to come to work, but the paycheck is good.  LMAO.

Cleaning the house?  I turn on the music off of XM (on DirecTV) on the surround sound, DH helps and we have fun w/it.  Don't ask me what our house looks like right now though, the music will be ON this wknd!!!  ha ha

hmmm, so maybe if you give me an example, might help you spin it to make it easier to do, have fun w/it, ya know?!?!?!

can you tell I'm trying to entertain myself here?

  • LOL Katie!

I'm not really looking for anything in particular other than just how do you do the things you dread.  Everyone dreads different things.  Like mine is I hate to make appointments for doctors/dentists/and such.  But today I finally got my butt in gear and made an eye doc and dentist appointment (although I was forced to make the dentist appt).  So just in general do you put off the dreaded deal or just get it over with?

  • I'm one of those that just does things and gets them over with.  I don't like to put off things and I don't mind confrontation, etc. So I'd rather deal with something and move forward to the good/happy stuff!!!  ha ha.  the sooner it's over the better!!!

As the old cliche' goes that my grammie used to say - "this too shall pass"

So may as well go for that hour at the dr and be done w/it!!!!!

    I know, I'm weird.

  • It depends on what it is.

For me, I make dentist/eye doctor/etc. appointments way in advance.  Then when they come around, I DO NOT cancel.  I can't, or I would never go.  I just make myself go right then even if I don't want to go.

Other things I procrastinate on... like cleaning the guest bedroom after someone stays at my house for the weekend.  lol.

  • One of my attributes that I'm most proud of is the fact that I am not  a procrastinator. At all. I hate having things hanging over my head. I'm very task oriented so if I have something I have to do (whether I want to do it or not) I just do it. I'd much rather be doing something I don't enjoy than have anything hanging over my head or sitting on my desk looking at me.

  • In most situations I like to get things over and done with b/c then I won't have to worry about it later.

  • As the self-proclaimed Queen of Procrastination, I am notorious for putting the dreaded off for who knows how long.  But, there have been a few times where I just get the worst over with, and it feels so much better.  So I am going to work on getting better about that.
    Siggy coming soon....
  • It depends on what it is. If it's something that *can* wait, I'll procrastinate but if it's necessary to go ahead and deal with it I try to get it out of the way ASAP. I guess you could call me a moderate procrastinator.

  • Most of the time I just do it to get it off my to do list....I love crossing stuff off!

  • I am such a procrastinator.  It is one of those things that I really don't like about myself, but it is so hard to change.
  • I am not usually too bad of a procrastinator.  Sometimes when I have a lot of etsy orders, like now, it is hard to get motivated after a break or if DH is watching TV or sleeping, then I will put it off to be with him.  I will be paying for that tonight thru this weekend :(.  If it is a place or event or apt I don't want to go to I just tell myself by 3:00 or whatever time it will be over with.  I started that when I was 13 and had to babysit every Saturday and everyday in the summer (who lets a 13 yr old babysit?!).  Some days that was the only thing to get me through.  Maybe looking at it that way will help!

I LOVE to do lists!  I just started making them as part of my New Year's goal to be more organized.  It's also good to help me remember things I need to do.  I actually called and scheduled my annual check-up with my regular doctor this week, so I was glad I got that out of the way and off my list.

    Siggy coming soon....
  • I like to make lists.  I feel accomplished and more motivated when I see things marked off.  For large things, like clean the living room, I break things down into smaller tasks.  Ex.  vacuum, dust, pick up magazines etc.  It helps keep me focused.
