road trip ideas?

DH & I are bored and looking for an inexpensive weekend getaway to some unique and interesting places.  We've already been to Galena, IL and the chain of lakes.  Not interested in WI Dells.

We'd like to visit somewhere funny or unique.  I read about the trollway in Mt. Horeb, WI (cute town with funny trolls carved out of big trees along their main streets).  I also read about a winery tour in southern MI where they trolley you around for the day.  I also read about a lodge resort in IN that has little one-room suite cabins on a lake & has horse drawn carriage rides throughout the property.

Can anyone recommend some interesting, cute towns within a few hours of Chicago? Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois?

Re: road trip ideas?

  • We went to Springfield for a road trip.  Someone once mentioned there was a drive up car diner just south/southwest of the city that has some vintage (mid 50s) car nights.
  • Have you tried to see the Frank Lloyd Wright Houses in the area?  There is a very well preserved one in Springfield, then one in Chicago, and another in Wisconsin.

Come to think of it my in-laws went up to WI around the time of the cranberry harvest.

  • try the tourism websites they have some good ideas.

  • DH and I like to go to Madison WI.
  • You could go to Milwaukee and check out the art museum.  It's a good museum and the addition by Calatrava is wonderful.

We've also been to Kallamazoo (sp?) to visit the Bell's brewery.  It's kind of a funky town.

  • Door County, WI is pretty cute if you're up for a longer drive (I think it's around 5 hours or so).
  • I recommend Cedarburg, WI. There's a winery, a brewery, lots of coffee shops and stores...we go there several times a year!
