Advice from moms needed...

Hello - I'm headed to Chicago for work next week and will be taking my 3 month old with me since I'm breastfeeding.  I lived in Chicago for many years and know that it will be extremely cold when I visit.

So, my question to Chicago area moms is...how do you dress your DC especially when going outside?  I have all sorts of long sleeved onesies, sweaters, turtlenecks, snow-type pants, one of those big fuzzy bodysuits, etc for him but I'm not sure how warm to dress him since we'll probably only go from the airport to the car then car to hotel and vice versa.  My mom will be watching him at the hotel and I don't anticipate that they will go anywhere because of the cold factor.

TIA!

Re: Advice from moms needed...

  • I'm not a mother, but one of my friends has a baby and dresses her DC in the big fuzzy suit thing.  It's going to be extremely cold next week - highs in the single digits, lows below zero, and that's before wind chill - so I'd pack long sleeves for inside and layers, a hat, and the fuzzy suit for outside.  Even just going from airport to car, etc. is enough to make you cold here!

  • Long sleeved onesies and some warmer clothes over that.  Hat, and gloves, maybe a snow suit.  And a super thick blanket for over the carseat for when she is outside.  It is suppose to get pretty bad here soon.
  • My DD wears an allover fleece suit with a hood and wool hat. That's more than enough -- she's usually warmer than I am.

I think as long as his head, hands and feet are warmly covered, you can layer less bulky things and he will be OK.  Especially since he'll just be outside for a few moments, it sounds like.  It's going to be in the single digits some days next week, though, so don't expose him for too long.

It's great that your mom will be there, too. Enjoy your trip!

  • We have a snowsuit that he sometimes wears.  Most the time, he is wearing a onesie, long sleeve onesie, jacket and a hat.  We cover his with a fleece blanket and plus we have a cover for the carseat.  And he's fine.
  • Will you be putting him in his carseat?  If you have an infant carseat you can use a carseat cover.  You just dress DS in his regular clothes but this goes over the entire carseat and IMO keeps him much warmer than anything else.

DS is getting too big to carry him inside of his carseat and I'm sad because the snow/fleece suits are way more of a PITA.
