Hi Ladies,

My husband is a police officer and we are considering moving to New Orleans in the very near future for a job promotion for him (like two or three months).  Can anyone provide me with a good real estate website and suggestions about what areas (maybe specific zip codes) are family friendly and close to a lot of other things.

 I've only lived in Minnesota so I'm very nervous about moving to a new state.  I want to make sure I'm in a family friendly and quaint neighborhood - I know where that is in Minnesota but I have now idea where that is in New Orleans.

 Also, what do you love about living in New Orleans?  What do you dislike about living in New Orleans?

 About areas, I've never lived in the city limits, so I don't have much info on that.  I grew up in St. Charles parish.  It is about a 30 to 40 minute drive into the city.  It has a smaller town feel, but it is very convenient to get places.  I grew up in Luling and the zip code is 70070.

Now I live on the Northshore.  It is a long commute because you have to drive over the lake, but it winds up being only 45 minutes to an hour depending on how bad traffic is.  The northshore has everything (shops, restaurants, etc) and it is known to have less crime than the city.  I live in Covington, but Mandeville and Slidell are closer to the city.  The zip code is 70433.

 Sorry I can't help much with the actual city, I'm sure some other ladies on here know more about neighborhoods that are good.  I know that uptown is nice but I think it may be pricey (not sure).

I love my area, but I'm a teacher and just had a son and I don't want to be over here any longer.  My school pulls from 3 miles away and has lots of underprivileged and low SES children.  Just not where I want to be.

Are you only looking to live in New Orleans, or are you willing to try a suburb?  Kenner (northern part, 70065), Metairie (70002, 70003, 70005, 70006) and River Ridge (70123) are decent areas.  I've never lived in the actual city, only the suburbs - but they are all close enough so you have access to everything.  I rarely go to the city itself, but when I do, it's easy and quick enough.  Certainly not a long ride AT ALL from Metairie or Kenner (where I am).

I;ve lived in the city all my life. I believe New Orleans police officers are required to live within the city limits. There are many zip codes but here are the ones I would look at 70124, 70131 and 70118.

I live in Algiers Point, which is on the west bank but still New Orleans, for residency purposes. It's very quaint and there are lots of young families here. I love living here, but it's not the safest place in the world. That sucks. And I hate cockroaches. Hmm.

I live in Uptown New Orleans and have all my life. Except during Katrina. What I love the most about the city is that it is unique like no other city. You will find people here like no other. What I dislike about the city probably is the corruption. But hell what city doesn't have corruption. The websites posted by the PP will suffice. We used Keller Williams when we purchased our home. Also, stated by the previous poster is if your husband is NOPD he will have to reside in Orleans Parish. Just do your research for where you want to live and don't believe everything you hear on television!!

 I see lots of NOPD patrol cars coming from the West Bank past the Orleans Parish line, specifically, Harvey. They temporarily lifted the residency requirement after Katrina. There's no official date for reinstatement, but seeing as the city is still in large disrepair, I can't imagine they would reinstate anytime soon.

If you don't have residency requirement definitely look in metairie. I'm in 70001 which is good, the ones mentioned above are good, and check out 70123 (river ridge) its a great little area not to far away.

I would highly recommend getting a knowledgeable real estate agent. New Orleans is tricky in that one block can be really nice, and about 2 blocks further down can be a not so desirable area. Metairie is a nice area, a lot of my family lives in the Bucktown area. Parts of Lakeview are coming back, and if you can get a good deal that is a great part of town. I also have lived uptown near Audubon park and loved it. It was so convenient and there are so many grea restaurants and shops close to where you live. I love the lakeview, lake vista, and lakefront area. I live in 70122 but have many friends and family in 70124. Lakeview is very family friendly you see kids all though the neighborhood. This area was highly affected by the levee break during katrina, but i believe it is coming back strong. You could try Burk Brokrage, but I think they over price some of their properties.

I love New Orleans and my husband thinks I'm nuts because I swear I will never live in Metairie or Kenner.

Having a good realtor is key - especially if you're not familiar with New Orleans neighborhoods.  If you haven't already found a realtor you like, you might want to call Wes Ancira (504.669.5847).  He's a local (born and raised) and is very knowledgeable.  He works for a small brokerage firm.
