Holy dead board batman!

I am seriously considering moving to Virginia and wanted some input on the different areas. I want to be in an area where its not too far from a body of water for summer time and snowboarding for winter. I am looking for an area where the housing costs are 900 or less for a 3bedroom in an ok area. Where daycare isnt too bad for an infant and a good school district for older kids.

Anyone?! Lol. Any info would help, thanks!!

  • Well, I feel like a nerd because I'm the only regular poster on a dead board! haha

I'm in Central Virginia, about 45 minutes from Charlottesville.  We just moved back here from Northern Virginia primarily because of cost and some other reasons.  Lynchburg is a nice place to raise a family and housing costs (I'm assuming you were asking about renting?) are very good.  My county is 8% below the national average of cost of living (and it's just across the river from L'burg).  Lynchburg also has Blue Ribbon schools and EC Glass was rated around 700 in the US News and World Report Top US high schools.  I don't know much about the local day cares, except that there are several...I don't have kids yet!  google Lynchburg MLS to search for real estate in the area...it will also give you a general idea (and it's free and no email required)

We are about 3 and a half hours away from Virginia Beach.  We usually hang out on the James River but Smith Mountain Lake is only about an hour west of us.  Wintergreen is 45 minutes from us in the next county but a lot of people travel to Massanutten and West Virginia for skiing over weekends.  There is a lot of great hiking and outdoor activities in Central Virginia.  Blue Ridge Parkway is 30 minutes away.

The only downside to my home area, is a certain fundamental church and university...but there are plenty of people that offset that aspect.

This is the first time I checked out the VA board! Apparently it's new.

Anyway, right now I life in Richmond. I actually live in the city so I doubt you could find something nice for under $900 per month for a 3 bedroom, but you could definitely find that somewhere around town. Also, you can definitely find houses around 150k, which I think is definitely a good price. I would say it's generally a middle cost of living location.

Sorry I can't answer anything about daycare as we are nowhere near having kids. My H is a teacher and I think the schools are pretty decent outside of Richmond City. Henrico and Chesterfield are good districts.

The beach is probably about 3 hours away...I'm not really sure as I haven't been to VA Beach from here, but definitely do able for a day trip. The mountains are about 1.5 horus away. D.C is less than 2 hours and Baltimore is about 2.5. It's definitely a good location to get to different places quickly.

Overall I would say Richmond has a pretty young vibe, and it's up and coming as they're trying to revive downtown. Also, out in the suburbs it's very family oriented, so it's the best of both worlds. We're actually moving to Philly in the summer because I'm going to med school there, but we would definitely hang around for a few more years if it wasn't for that.

You can page me on the MM board or email me at amlocke at hotmail dot com if you have any other questions. Good luck with your decision!
