Favorite St. Louis Restaurant

My DH and I relocated to St. Louis 2 1/2 years ago and when anyone asks me what my favorite part about living here is I always say the restaurants. There are so many great local, non-chain places to eat here!  However, I know there are still a lot of places out there we haven't been to yet.  Any suggestions?  DH's only rule is he has to be able to wear jeans. Smile

Re: Favorite St. Louis Restaurant

  • Oh!  I forgot to say what my favorites are.  I really can't pick just one, so on the top of my list are Barristers (clayton), Mi Ranchito (U City), Schlafly (Maplewood), and Triumph Grill (near SLU).
  • we just visited there recently and there was an awesome! thai food place...im trying to remember where it was. it wasn't down town and it was by a bunch of vintage shops. there are like 4 different thai food places in this little area. if i can remember i'll post it.

  • Have you been to Lotawata Creek in Fairview Heights, IL (about 15m from downtown)?

    www.lotawata.com

I live in Fairview and that's where everyone always wants to eat when they head my direction.

There's also a tiny hole-in-the-wall gyro place right down the street from me. All Meditteranean food.. in an old taco bell building, looks like nothing, but I LOVE their food.

My husband's grandparents live in Fairview so we're over that direction quite a bit.  I'll make sure to write both of those down.  Thanks!

Also, last night we went to Highway 61 Roadhouse in Webster Groves and really loved the food.  I wasn't super excited about going there, but it turned out to be wonderful!

  • I'll second Lottawatta Creek.  We love that place and even make the drive every once in awhile to go there.  Good food and huge portions.  However, the couple of times we went on a Saturday night it was a 2 + hr wait.  I'm not sure if it's like that all the time.

Not sure where you're at and this may be too far to drive, but for Italian I love Stefanina's in Troy, MO.  They have a couple of other locations, but I like this one the best.

If you love garlic, then a good place is Saleems (I think it's Lebanese).  They have a location on the Loop and now another one in West County.  I heard that the location in West County is better than the Loop, but we haven't tried it out yet.

  • Sage is awesome food.  Very cool place.  Its kind of by the brewery.  the chef even came out and delivered our appetizers to us.  soooo good.

Also Revival.  Its at Choteau and Grand.  Its kind of down home cooking with a twist.  Dark wood furnishings, young.  really good food and prices are reasonable.

I'd definitely recommend either of those.

  • As far as our neighborhood goes, when I get a craving for a gyro, Michael's in Maplewood is an older bar and grill and have really good greek food, love the greek salads.  We also really love Schlafly Bottleworks (Maplewood) and if you like homemade fresh pasta, try Stellina Pasta Cafe (south city on watson rd).  I'll 3rd Lotawata, I work out that way and I love their Texarkana ribeye and fried dill pickles! That makes me hungry!
  • Thanks for all of the suggestions ladies!  I will have to write them all down.  mmmm...I'm hungry now!
  • I agree - too many good one to narrow down to just one.

I love: Harvest, Portabella's, Modesto, Mosaic, 1111 Mississippi, Sidney St., Bar Italia, Remy's...I could go on an on!

There's one more that I really like, but the name is escaping me...it's near 1111 Mississippi, and it has a market...

Anyway...those are some of my favs.

  • For pizza- Dewey's

Someone mentioned Michael's above; their gyro salad is hands down my favorite salad in St. Louis. I also wanted to give another vote for Revival. Their calamari is really good.

Thai- Mai Lee in U City.

Mexican- El Matador in Chesterfield Valley.

Fancy, it's our anniversary, let's drop some cash- Sidney Street Cafe.

Runners up- Scottish Arms, Llewellyn's, House of India,  Schlafly Bottleworks.

  • I think Weddingstuff was thinking of either U-City Delmar Loop or South Grand.

I love Kobe Steak House of Japan in Westport:http://www.kobesteakhouse.us/

     J. Bucks: http://www.jbucks.com/

    Sunset 44: http://www.sunset44.com/

Casual: Blueberry Hill (I CRAVE cheddar burgers): http://www.blueberryhill.com/

  • I think Weddingstuff was probably thinking of The King and I on South Grand.

The place near 1111 Mississippi with the market is SqWire's.

My favorites for a nicer evening out:  Trattoria Marcella, 1111 Mississippi, Niche, Sidney Street Cafe

My favorites for a casual evening out:  Triumph Grill, Three Monkeys (on Morganford south of Arsenal), Tin Can Tavern (across the street from Three Monkeys; there's also one on Locust not far from The Tap Room), Schlafly Bottleworks, Schlafly Tap Room.

We just went to The Stable this weekend (in Benton Park in the old Lemp Brewery complex), and it was good--pizza and a great beer list.  Kinda loud later in the evening, though, so if you want nice conversation, I'd recommend going early.

  • Sqwires - that's it! Thanks! :)

  • A lot of good ones here but I can't believe that no one's mentioned Vin de Set!  It's nicer but he can wear jeans.  I'd go in the summer and sit on the roof top deck. Food is amazing every time and it's not expensive for a nicer place.

We also love Cafe Provencal in K-wood.

JJ Twigs in Valley Park is fantastic as well (pizza).

  • I forgot to mention my all time hands down casual restaurant favorite! La Tropicana!!! Oh my gosh if you love Cuban, Mexican, Spanish, etc food. You have to try it.  It's hidden in a little neighborhood off of Chippewa, between hampton and kingshighway.  Look it up, their cuban sandwiches are better than what I had in Miami and their tamales are to die for! Also love the cilantro chicken empanadas! Beware though, because it a grocery store, with a cafe and outdoor seating. They even have music in the evenings sometimes.
  • I love Massa's in Kirkwood and also The Lemp Mansion has great food and a fun place to go--great history!
  • Anthonino's Taverna on the Hill, you can wear jeans and it is soooo good. Great Gyro's. pizzas and really everything else on the menu.

Address is 2225 Macklind St. Louis, MO 63139
